Already Imperiled

A fire station is a good idea, but not in an already environmentally challenged watershed, which includes 319 Upper Seven Ponds Road in Water Mill. This property itself holds wetlands in the eastern portion of the parcel, which are part of a much larger waterway and underground connectivity spanning Corwith Pond, Mill Pond and Mecox Bay. Mill Pond already suffers from toxic algae blooms due in part to environmental impact. Runoff and ground seepage from fire truck cleaning and maintenance would introduce hazardous and carcinogenic materials to an already imperiled watershed.

The bus depot located a short distance down the road from the proposed firehouse is responsible for yearlong impactful light pollution. The addition of an adjacent firehouse and its own nighttime lighting requirements would be disruptive to residents in all directions, creating a solid light corridor spanning the entire length of Upper Seven Ponds Road between the Long Island Rail Road bridge overpass and Mill Pond Road.

How much impact can our waterways and residential neighborhood absorb? Why not put the fire house on the highway where it belongs?
