Today is Otis Bistrian’s birthday and the Bonac on Board to Wellness 5K run at the East Hampton Middle School. This is a fun day for students that is sponsored by the East Hampton Wellness Foundation, the school, PTA and the Old Montauk Athletic Club. Many thanks to EHMS nurse Barbara Tracey and all the volunteers who help make it happen.
Memorial Day weekend is here and so is the Amagansett Fire Department’s 100th anniversary Classic Car Show Benefit. It takes place on Saturday, May 25, on the Amagansett Firehouse grounds. May 26 is the rain date. The show takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 per person; children under 12 are admitted for free. There will be firehouse chicken, pulled pork, chili, hamburgers, hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, ice cream and more for purchase. This is a fun day for the whole family.
Congratulations to Amagansett s own Buddy Page Disunno. She graduated from Suffolk University in Boston on May 19 with Bachelor of Science degree in journalism. Her family joined her in the celebration which was even more special in light of the Boston Marathon tragedy.
Congratulations to Amagansett native Brett Bistrian who graduated from Plymouth College in New Hampshire on Saturday, May 18. He was joined by both his parents and his brother Barry Michael.
There was an all-school awards program at East Hampton High School on Wednesday, May 15. Many of our Amagansett alumni received awards. Congratulations to Abby Okin for receiving the silver in ninth grade English (ELA) honors; Georgia Bennett for receiving the silver in ELA 10th grade honors; and LB Lownes for earning the silver for Advanced Placement English literature. In mathematics, Julian MacGurn received the gold in geometry and Liam McGovern received the silver in algebra 2/trigonometry.
In science, Marissa Brophy received silver in Living Environment; Georgia Bennett received the silver in chemistry, Jacqueline Smudzinski received the silver in Methods of Research, Karl Rosenberg received the silver in Advanced Placement Physics, Emma Newburger and Cosima Schelfhout received the gold in Advanced Placement Biology, and LB Lownes received silver in Advanced Placement Environmental Science.
In social studies, Marissa Brophy received the gold in global history and geography grade 9 honors and Abby Okin received the silver. Cosima Schelfhout received the silver in Advanced Placement U.S. History and in Advanced Placement Human Geography. In world languages, the gold medal went to Julian MacGurn for French II and the silver to Emma Newburger for French IV honors. Liam McGovern received the silver in Latin II and Emma Newburger the silver in Latin III. The National Latin exam awards went to Marissa Brophy, Julian MacGurn, Liam McGovern and Abby Okin.
In art, Conrad Kabbaz received the silver in studio art and LB Lownes received the gold in Advanced Placement Studio Art 2D—design. Laura Gunderson received the community service award for Grade 12. In music, Georgia Bennett received the silver in music theory. Christopher Schwagerl received the John Phillip Sousa Award. In drama, Deyo Trowbridge received the award for best supporting actor in a musical. The gold technology award for woodworking 101 went to Liam McGovern.
Cosima Schelfhout received an East Hampton Lions Club Student of the Month Award for grade 11. In Grade 12, the President’s Education Awards Program award went to Andrew Davis, Laura Gunderson, LB Lownes, Karl Rosenberg and Christopher Schwagerl. Laura Gunderson and LB Lownes were selected as regional finalists in the L.I. Science & Engineering Fair in April; they teamed up for the last two years in Mrs. Benincasa’s Methods & Research class and studied phytofiltration of fly ash and zinc contaminated waters.
We should be so proud of our Amagansett alumni. Next week I will bring you all the colleges our graduating seniors are attending. They are quite an impressive bunch.
There are just a few more Sundays for the evaluation portion of the 2013 Junior Lifeguard program. It takes place on Sundays through June 16 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the YMCA RECenter Pool. This program is for ages 9 to 14. For more information, call John Ryan Sr. at 324- 2787. Participants must pass the swimming test to be admitted into the Junior Lifeguard program for this summer. This is a fabulous program and I highly encourage you to bring your children to it. The Junior Lifeguard program begins Saturday, June 22, at Indian Wells and Ditch Plains and culminates with a tournament on the weekend of August 4 and 5.
On Saturday, May 25, at 3:30 p.m. Quail Hill farm will join the Amagansett Library for story time and tomato seedling planting. This is a perfect opportunity for families. Sunday, May 26, at 1:30 p.m. those from grade two all the way to adult have been invited to make an origami sunflower seed planter. Stop by the circulation desk and check out all the ongoing programs and projects going on.
The library has some updated technology news. There is a new procedure for the public access computers and as always there is free wifi. The library offers one-on-one workshops and Reference USA by appointment; contact reference librarian Seth Bank at sethqbank@yahoo.com. On Tuesday, May 28, at noon there will be a class on downloading e-books to your e-reader. Please register in advance by calling the library at 267-3810.
The Amagansett Village Improvement Society, founded in 1921, is having a Roaring ’20’s theme to its annual Summer Splash party. This is right in step with all the “Great Gatsby” parties going on around town. Save the date for Saturday, August 3, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the South Fork Country Club. There will be great music, a silent auction and hors d’oeuvres. Period style clothing is optional but doing the Charleston is not. For more information, call 267-3664.
The First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett holds worship service at 11 a.m. on Sundays. All members of the community are welcome to attend. It is so nice to see the repair process beginning on Scoville Hall.
St. Michael’s Lutheran Church holds worship services on Sundays at 11 a.m. It is also home to the Amagansett satellite of the East Hampton food pantry, which is open on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Volunteers and donations are always welcome.
Renovations are taking place at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. It looks beautiful. The congregation has mass on Sundays at 9 a.m., followed by a coffee hour on the front lawn, weather permitting.
Beaches are getting ready for their opening. Thanks to the town, more signs with access identification numbers are being placed at unprotected beaches, so if you are in trouble you can better contact Ocean Rescue and 911 by giving your location number. But, as always, it is best to swim at guarded beaches.
Just a reminder, that schools are still open. Please drive safely, keep your eyes open for pedestrians, especially in the crosswalks, and be patient if you intend to make a left turn.
