Today is Maria Littman’s 13th birthday. Wow! Where does the time go? You may have met Maria working at her mom Vicki’s farm stand this summer. Happy birthday Maria. Today is also Rick McMaster’s birthday. Have fun everyone.I hope you enjoyed your Columbus Day holiday weekend in the hamlet. There was so much going on. The Film Festival, fairs, yard sales and much more. Thanks, again, to the AVIS (Amagansett Village Improvement Society) for the beautiful flower boxes throughout our hamlet. There is no school today in honor of the Yom Kippur holiday.

Tonight at the Harbor Bistro there is a benefit from 6 to 8 p.m. for the Dance Hampton Takes Disney event. The event is 25$ per person and all the money goes to help our local dancers compete at Walt Disney World.

Tomorrow, Thursday, October 13, Isabela a Green Explorer Expedition adventure film and exhibit of the Galapos by Dell Cullum will take place at LTV Studios it will be a public screening with free admission at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the photography exhibit. Some of Dell’s amazing photographs will only be on display at this event. It is not to be missed for so many reasons. There are some very important messages about our environment and trash and the world. Hope to see you there.

The 3rd Annual Tyler Valcich Memorial Auto Show was postponed from last Sunday to this Sunday, October 16, due to the after math of Matthew and the rains. It will take place at the Amagansett Fire House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a special event formed by Tyler’s friends and family to honor Tyler and his love of cars and to bring awareness to depression and suicide that tragically took his life. There is a $20 fee to showcase your vehicle. The spectator fee is $5, but kids enter for free, so bring your whole family. Enjoy the music, food, and cars to honor the memory of Tyler Valcich. All proceeds and donations will directly benefit The Tyler Project, to raise awareness and to increase and improve coordination of mental health services for students, young adults and families in our community.

For more information or to register your vehicle for the show, please email TVautoshow@gmail.com. Thanks in advance for attending and supporting this very important cause and one that is very close to my heart. I hope to see you there.

The Amagansett PTA is having a fabulous Casino Night Fundraiser on Saturday, October 22, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Stephen Talkhouse. There will be casino tables, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle. The $25 entry fee includes playing chips. Come dressed in your Vegas best and have fun to raise money for a great cause—our kids.

Saturday, October 22, is the Second Annual Food Institute celebration at 11 a.m. at The Amagansett Farmers Market. The Food Institute has really brought the market back to life and almost like the old days when Pat Struck owned and ran it and Kim Slater (Bistrian then) and I ran the penny candy department. Again, how time flies!

At the Amagansett Free Library there are some great events coming up for families and kids. This is the fall and Halloween season and this Saturday, October 15, at 1:30 p.m. will be “Who lives in your backyard.” Meet the animals with South Fork Museum. Sunday, October 30, will be superheroes and super villains.

The Ladies Village Improvement Society (LVIS) is offering the Madeleon DeVoe Talley Scholarship for $3,000. This offer is for a woman who is at least 25 years of age and is currently enrolled or plans to enroll in a college undergraduate program. The applicant must be a resident of East Hampton Town for the last two years. Applications for the scholarship are available in the office and must be completed and returned by November 4 to LVIS at 95 Main Street in East Hampton Village.

Have a great and safe week and be careful of the mean, scary clowns and other unnecessary nonsense.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. We brought everything we had ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
