Leaders of the Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance are reintroducing a plan that they say will reduce ambulance taxes for local residents with a third-party billing system—a previously introduced idea that never... more

Similar But Different

I love history. There’s much in the patterns of human behavior that are repeated by our species throughout the millennia. Books provide us with the opportunity to learn from the lives of others. For instance, had the Inca possessed writing and libraries, Atahualpa, king of the defunct and disappeared Inca Empire, might have known not to trust the Spanish when they invited him to a party, where they killed him. We have writing and libraries, yet our species continues to repeat our historical mistakes countless times. In contemporary times, we have Donald Trump, the current occupant of the White House, ... by Staff Writer

Community Effort

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the Community Outreach Program and Adopt-a-Family were able to deliver over 90 Thanksgiving baskets throughout the Greater Westhampton area to families and individuals who needed the help. On December 19, we were able to deliver 100 Christmas baskets with gifts to families, shut-ins, individuals down on their luck, and single parents with children barely making ends meet. This year, because of the generosity of our amazing community, we were able to provide a wonderful Christmas and much needed items to many children. Through coordination and cooperation of all the local churches and charitable organizations, the ... by Staff Writer

Our Time Is Now

Our community took the opportunity to demonstrate what it cares about at the “Drawdown Festival: Films Forum Fun,” presented by Drawdown East End and the Southampton Arts Center on Saturday, January 11. Despite the lure of spending a sunny, warm winter Saturday in the out of doors, over 650 citizens were drawn to learn about “drawdown,” solutions for the reversal of global warming, with its cascading economic and health benefits. This is history. Everyone browsed some of the dozens of environmental exhibitors who informed us of what we can do now to make a difference. Over 400 people spent two ... by Staff Writer

Teach, Don’t Ban

Destroying the livelihood of local Southampton Town businesses that sell balloons is not the answer to a litter problem. Educating the public how to properly use and dispose of balloons is the real solution. The Town of Southampton, which already has a ban on intentional balloon releases, is now proposing a ban on the sale and distribution of helium-filled balloons at party stores, pharmacies and supermarkets [“Southampton Town To Consider Bans On Helium Balloon Sales, Limit On Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers,” 27east.com, January 13]. The economic impact on these businesses, lost jobs and reduced tax revenues will be real. In some ... by Staff Writer

Why I Am For Vaccines

I read with interest the Viewpoint by Maude Wilson, Rienna Russo and Lily Wilson in the January 16 editions [“School Board’s Letter Dismisses Real Science”], because it brought back horrific memories of a terrible illness, which occurred many years ago in my family. I know that many people have extremely strong views against vaccines, but, along with the three women mentioned above, I must tell the readership why I am for them. We were living in New York City in November 1973 when our middle son, who had been frolicking happily in a playground a few hours previously, at 6 ... by Staff Writer

An Unfair Ban

I’m writing to express my opposition to the proposed balloon ban [“Southampton Town To Consider Bans On Helium Balloon Sales, Limit On Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers,” 27east.com, January 13]. Efforts to protect the environment are important and admirable, but those efforts should be focused on the most damaging offenders to get the most environmental benefit from the government action — and banning the sale of helium balloons is certainly not one of them. Stevenson’s sold a total of about 3,600 balloons in all of 2019, mostly in small bunches taken home by people to celebrate a birthday. I doubt more than ... by Staff Writer

Justice Run Bad

Yes, the benefits are getting better and better for criminals in the State of New York. The softening of our society is led by Governor Andrew Cuomo, with the help of Assemblyman Fred Thiele, among others [“New Criminal Justice Law Poses Big Challenges For Local Law Enforcement Agencies,” 27east.com, December 17]. Bail reform eliminated cash bail for 400 offenses. It was approved last year by lawmakers with backers saying it was one of a number of major progressive accomplishments by the Democrat-controlled State Legislature and Gov. Cuomo. Mr. Thiele voted for it, and State Senator Kenneth LaValle did not. The ... by Staff Writer

Lock Them Up

In 2017, after watching Donald Trump and his band of inept lackeys commit treason against the United States of America, I wrote a Letter to the Editor expressing the view that this administration should be brought to justice. On January 15, 2020, the House of Representatives voted to send Articles of Impeachment against the disgraced Donald Trump to the Senate. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi skillfully guided two articles, Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress, through the House and successfully delivered them to the Senate. While the “wheels of justice” grind slowly, they do move forward. I closed my 2017 ... by Staff Writer
