An 'Accident'?

One of the cottages at 13 Ochre Lane in Art Village was demolished. Art Village is a historic site just to the west of Southampton Village. Art Village, built in the late 1800s, centered on William Merritt Chase’s studio, with a group of flanking cottages and homes for his patrons and students. The compound was all built in an Arts and Crafts shingle-style with a strong architectural integrity.

Last week, one of the three cottages was demolished. The owners had a permit to add an extension to the existing home. I expect we will hear that tearing down the home was an accident. The stop-work order issued by the town is little help now.

We have heard this in Southampton Village a few times in the past. Now what? The homeowners should only be allowed to replace the homes with an exact replica of what was there to try to maintain the integrity of the community. If they can replicate Notre Dame after that fire, they can replace this house.

Again and again, we have seen where accidents have befitted by an owner’s whims while violating the code. This action cannot be rewarded.
