Andrew Edward Morgan, a longtime resident of Water Mill, died of natural causes on September 1, 2016, at his home in Philadelphia. He was 93 and well known around Southampton, along with his beloved Scottie dogs. Many of his happiest days were spent at his home on Cobb Isle in Water Mill, at the beach with his dogs, or telling stories over dinner at The American Hotel in Sag Harbor, or over brunch at the Love Lane Kitchen in Mattituck.

Mr. Morgan’s parents left Belfast, Ireland, and settled in Texas when he was very young. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1942 and, following his service, went to Southern Methodist University where he played football. When a good football game was on television, he was never too far from the set.

Mr. Morgan’s career began in publishing, first as advertising manager for the New York Journal-American newspaper. From there, he joined Conde Nast Publications, owned by the Newhouse family, as sales promotion manager of Vogue magazine. At Vogue, he helped put together duos of advertisers to run special ad sections that Vogue would produce. It was a unique and very successful concept. In 1970, he was selected as the associate publisher of the The Newark Star-Ledger newspaper, another Newhouse publication.

Most of Mr. Morgan’s career centered on ad sales, so it seemed natural that he turned to the advertising agency business. He first joined leading ad executive George Lois of Lois Holland Callaway, and later pioneering female agency president, Mary Wells Lawrence of Wells Rich Greene. He continued in the advertising business in New York as an agency principal, and ultimately started an agency in Philadelphia.

Funeral arrangements were private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Rescue Fund, arfhamptons.org.

Still Alive

Now come the shortest days, and we offset the long nights with lights and little candles everywhere. In a show of determination and defiance, decor is how we get through the darkest days merrily. I do not rationalize the need to decorate, and I do not fight the urge. Instead, I consider what is durable and plentiful. If I hang it from a bespoke wire hook, will people grasp the symmetry and austere beauty? Will they flock to my booth at the craft market? We had a bumper garlic crop. And sales were slack. So, going into soup season, we’ve ... by Marilee Foster

Simply Not True

I write in reference to an article published by 27east.com dated December 6 [“Southampton Village Ethics Board Finds Trustee Robin Brown Violated Code With Attendance at Fundraisers”], regarding a decision by the Southampton Village Ethics Board erroneously finding that I violated the village’s code of ethics by attending two fundraisers. I recently attended a Metropolitan Opera event at which a friend of mine was an honoree for her 90th birthday, and a fundraiser hosted by the Peconic Baykeeper. Although nothing about attending either event violates the ethics code, I found myself subject to an investigation by the village’s Ethics Board ... by Staff Writer
