Andrew Hegeman
Andrew S. Hegeman, retired Commander U.S. Navy died on November 9, 2018, in Fairport, New York, of pancreatic cancer. He was 87. His wife of 64 years, Kathryn (Vail) Hegeman, Ed.D died August 1, 2018.
The couple moved to the Rochester area to be with their daughter, Irene Richard, MD, professor of neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, during their declining years.
Mr. Hegeman was born the peak of the Great Depression to Edward R. Hegeman, a U.S. Postal Service carrier and World War I U.S. Navy veteran, and his wife, Matilda (Schuler) Hegeman, in Yonkers.
The couple was predeceased by their son, Paul; and survived by four children, Jennifer, Mark, and John (Bonnie) Hegeman, Irene Hegeman Richard (Tanya Beiswenger); five grandchildren, Shane, Luke, and Terryn Hegeman, Caitlin and Jessica Richard; three brothers, Edward, Richard (Mary), William (Marguerite) Hegeman; as well many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mr. Hegeman graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, and received a scholarship to attend Columbia University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1953. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy’s OCS program in Newport, Rhode Island. Upon completion, he married his sweetheart, Kathryn Vail, on July 10, 1954, and they moved to Washington D.C., where he attended the U.S. Naval Intelligence School at the Naval Observatory. The couple spent the next four years in various U.S. and oversees locations during his active duty, after which he continued in the U.S. Navy Reserves, retiring at the rank of commander in 1975.
The couple had five children, whom they raised in Yonkers, until 1973, during which time Mr. Hegeman obtained his master’s in business administration from New York University. They moved to Eastport to be near Seatuck Cove Marina, a small business Mr. Hegeman lined up for his retirement from Verizon (formerly NY Telephone Co.) where he worked from 1957 until 1984 as a financial analyst and staff economist. Meanwhile, his wife continued her education, culminating in a doctorate of education from Columbia University, while working full time as a teacher at Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School. The couple lived in Eastport until 2016, at which point they moved to Pittsford, a suburb of Rochester.
