Aniela Beatrice Maria Falter Adams dies at 87

Longtime Quogue summer resident Aniela Beatrice Maria Falter Adams died on June 16 at the home of her daughter, Diane, in Millbrook, New York. She was 87.

Born July 12, 1922, to Alfred and Wanda Falter in Kudowa, Poland, she lived in Katowice Upper Silesia and Warsaw, and her family often summered at their farms in Zydowo and Rostworowo.

Some of her summers were also spent in France, at the Manoir Mennemore near Forges-les-Eaux and Neufchâtel in Normandy.

In the fall of 1938, she attended a “finishing school” that she often described as “really rather old-fashioned” at the Ivy House in Wimbledon, England. During the following summer, she traveled extensively through France, making stops in both Cannes and Paris.

In 1939, at the beginning of World War II, she fled Warsaw and traveled through Romania, France and England before sailing on the HMS Duchess of Bedford headed to Canada on July 28, 1940.

A 1944 graduate of Vassar College, she became a U.S. citizen on July 18, 1948.

She married Halstead Joseph Adams on April 9, 1948. The couple’s twin sons, Douglas and Jeffrey, were born on March 30, 1949, and their daughter, Diane, was born on December 9, 1955.

When the children were growing up, the family split their time between Quogue and their Manhattan home on East 86th Street.

Over the years, she rented properties in Quogue, including the Eggerts’ and Fleischmanns’ houses, before buying property of her own and building a house on Ogden Pond.

As a member of the Quogue Field Club, she performed in the Quogue Quips. She was also a member of the Quogue Beach Club and the Westhampton Garden Club.

Mrs. Adams is survived by two sons, Douglas and his wife Sharon of Eastport and Jeffrey and his wife Sarah of East Quogue; a daughter, Diane Toland and her husband Richard of Quogue and Millbrook; and three granddaughters, Molly Adams, Abigail Henning and Avery Toland.

In addition to her husband, Halstead Adams, who died in 1965, she was predeceased by a sister, Maria Clayton, and a brother-in-law, Robert Clayton. She was also predeceased by her longtime companion, MacLean B. Smith, with whom she enjoyed traveling extensively to England, France, Italy and Spain, as well as other parts of Europe, Bermuda and Palm Beach.

In accordance with her wishes, no funeral is planned. A memorial service may be scheduled at a later date.
