Anita Fretta of Southampton died on June 5. She was 91.

She was born in New York City June 12, 1931, to Katie and Vincent Aurigemma.

She moved from Manhattan to Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, to raise her family surrounded by all her sisters and brothers with their large extended families.

Holidays at Aunt/Grammie Anita’s were full of family, food, love, and laughter, her family said, which continued until they relocated to Somerset, New Jersey, to be closer to her grandchildren. There was never a missed baseball game, school play, dance recital, cheerleading competition, or graduation for her grandchildren, her family said, and she was incredibly proud of all their achievements.

Later moving to her favorite place, Southampton, with her daughter, Catherine, after the loss of her husband, over the past decade, she has lived with her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, Katie, enjoying her favorite pastimes, cooking, reading and sunning by the pool

She was exceptionally caring, loving, and had an incredible sense of humor, the family said. She would share the stories of her life with her grandchildren and teach them all the important lessons she learned from her own experiences. She passed on her wisdom, her skills in cooking, and the reminder to love yourself unconditionally. She was confident in who she was and had immense pride in her children’s, and grandchildren’s, accomplishments, they said. She was not only a grandmother, but a friend and trusted confidant of all her grandchildren.

She was truly a remarkable woman whose loss will be forever felt by her family, they said. She was a source of comfort, honesty, forgiveness, and love, whose passing has left a piece missing in the hearts of her loved ones. They take comfort in knowing that she missed her husband deeply and they are now reunited in God’s Kingdom, they said.

She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Paez and son-in-law Michael Paez; her son, Dr. Joseph Fretta and his wife Danka; grandson, John Fretta; and granddaughters, Katie Paez, Jenny Fretta, and Jacqueline Fretta. She was predeceased by her husband John “Poppi” Fretta.

Services were held on June 9 at R. J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays, followed by Mass at St. Rosalie’s RC Church and interment at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to East End Hospice (eeh.org).

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. The Urgency of Real

The Hamptons International Film Festival typically takes up a lot of oxygen in the fall on the South Fork, but it’s worth celebrating a slightly smaller but just as vital event in late autumn: the Hamptons Doc Fest. Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. It’s a 12-month undertaking for Lofaro and her staff, and the result is always a tantalizing buffet of outstanding filmmaking, not to mention unforgettable stories. Proceed With Caution

Overlay districts are a common zoning tool used by many municipalities. Southampton Town has used them to varying degrees of success — the aquifer protection overlay district has been a winner; a downtown overlay district in Hampton Bays less so — in various parts of the town. They essentially look at the existing zoning, then allow those rules governing what can be done on properties to be reconsidered if there’s a newer concern to be addressed. In a bid to clean up the process for creating more affordable housing, the Town Board is looking at a new overlay district that ... by Editorial Board

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... by Karl Grossman
