Ann Hartley Winters, Formerly Of Westhampton Beach, Dies May 6

Ann Hartley Winters died on May 6 at home in Castleton, Vermont. She was 78 and had been a resident of Westhampton Beach.

Born in Jamaica, Queens, on January 28, 1938, she was the daughter of Croydon Howson Austin Hartley and Evelyn Doris Bates. She attended Westhampton Beach High School, Neuchatel Junior College in Switzerland and Colby Sawyer Junior College in New Hampshire. She married Charles Griffing Winters on June 14, 1958, who predeceased her in 1991 as a result of a car accident.

Over the years, the family lived in the Chicago area, Long Island, central and northern Maine and in Seacoast, New Hampshire.

While her children were young, Ms. Winters was mostly a stay-at-home mom who worked occasionally as a substitute teacher. In the late 1980s she went to work for Custom Pools of Newington, New Hampshire, where she stayed for more than 23 years before retiring in 2008.

In 2010, she returned to Long Island and lived in Center Moriches for five years, until recently relocating to Castleton.

Some of her hobbies over the years included sailing, raising and showing collies, painting, golf, bowling, and boating. She was an avid crossword puzzler and had completed nearly 100 jigsaw puzzles.

She is survived by four children and their spouses, Charlann and Ed Walker of Maine, Sid and Cheryl Winters of Tennessee; Dan and Susan Winters of Connecticut, and Sarah and Michael Derevjanik of Castleton; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. A fourth great-granddaughter is due later this year. She is also survived by a brother, Croydon Richardson “Dick” Hartley and wife Ardee of Colorado. She was predeceased by a sister, Pamela Brooke, in 1980.

Visitation will be held at Follet and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on Friday, May 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m. at Westhampton Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Westhampton Cemetery. A deacon’s reception will be held at Westhampton Presbyterian Church following the interment ceremony.
