Anne Warner Halsey, a longtime resident of Westhampton Beach, died April 25, 2018. She was 88.

Born on September 11, 1929, in East Hampton, she was the daughter of Elmer and Lucille (Harris) Warner. She moved to Westhampton Beach when she was 9, following the death of her mother and her father’s re-marriage. She attended Westhampton Beach schools where she excelled in math, science and athletics. She met Benjamin Griffing Halsey during her junior year and the two were married a year later on December 15, 1941. During her lifetime, Mrs. Halsey was a stay-at-home mom, a real estate broker for Henry Meeker, Katherine Kammerer and Neil Rego and a nursing assistant for Dr. Donald Keller at the Westhampton Beach medical and nursing home facility.

Later in life, she became a home health aide for local families, such as Jay Graham, Anne Colt and Lillian Goldstein. Survivors said that she derived much happiness from caring for others.

Mrs. Halsey was predeceased in 1998 by her husband of 52 years, Benjamin G. Halsey Sr.; her sister, Lucelle Parker; her brother, Elmer Warner Jr.; and her half-sister, Judith Haberland.

She is survived by her five children, Benjamin G Halsey Jr.(Robin), Gary B. Halsey (Mary), Thomas W. Halsey, Charlene Halsey Mascia (Allen M. Smith ) and LuAnn Halsey Burke; grandchildren, Heather Halsey (Colby), Melissa Halsey, Amanda Becchio, Benjamin G. Halsey III, Nicole Halsey Rakes (Jeremi), Staci Hadley (Steve), Justin Potter (Bambi), Robert Mascia (Lauri), Christopher Mascia (Jamee), Dakota R. Smith, Jacob A. Smith (Jeanne), David M. Smith (Shelly), Karol Bruschi, and Sarah Burke and Ryan Burke; and many great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Beach United Methodist Church in Westhampton Beach on July 3, at 11 a.m.

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Police were called, but as one town official pointed ... 1 May 2024 by Editorial Board

Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits.
