Armed Robbery On Sag Harbor's Main Street; Suspects At Large

A man brandishing a handgun robbed a Main Street store in Sag Harbor Village on Tuesday night at approximately 5:50 p.m., and the suspect and a female accomplice were both still at large on Wednesday.Sag Harbor Village Police responded to a 6:25 p.m. call from a passerby who reported an armed robbery at Corner Closet, a high-end consignment store on Main Street. Southampton Town and New York State Police were assisting in the investigation, but no arrests were made.According to Sag Harbor Village Police Detective Jeffrey Proctor, two Hispanic suspects in their late 20s entered the store, and the male suspect immediately flashed the handgun and forced the store owner, Seena Stromberg, who was alone, to the rear of the store.Over the course of the next half hour, she was placed in a storage area, and the man put her hands and legs in restraints, according to Village Police. The suspects returned to the front of the store, where they stole several items and then fled out the front door.The store owner was able to get free from the restraints and exited the store, at which time she asked the passerby to call 911.On Wednesday morning, Ms. Stromberg said the two appeared high on drugs, and that the man put the gun up to her head at times.“Who pulls a gun in Sag Harbor?” Ms. Stromberg said on her way to the police station to provide more information, still obviously shaken by the experience. “You want to steal a bag, you steal a bag. I’ve never heard of a gun in Sag Harbor. I was afraid for my life.”Detective Proctor said no video surveillance from the store captured the assailants, but that police will be covering all their bases by examining footage from other Main Street cameras and canvassing the area for any witnesses.At one point during the search on Tuesday evening, according to Southampton Town Police, a suspicious vehicle was pulled over on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike, but the vehicle was deemed unrelated to the armed robbery. Several agencies assisted in a search for the suspects on Tuesday night and early Wednesday.Sketches of the suspects will be available Wednesday night, and will be posted on 27east.com.Corner Closet was closed Wednesday morning but was still in disarray, with an “Open” sign hanging in the window of the locked door and Tuesday’s coffee cups on the counter above displaced shelves and handbags.
