Longtime Westhampton Beach resident Barbara Gill “Bebe” Betts died at home on November 6, with her twin children, Bobbie and Whit, by her side. She was 95.

Born April 3, 1920, she was the youngest daughter of William Augustus Gill and Lucy Gair Gill and was raised in Llewellyn Park, West Orange, New Jersey, and spent her summers at her parents’ vacation home on Dune Road. She attended the Beard School for Girls in Morris County, New Jersey, and graduated from Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Connecticut, in 1938.

She was at the Dune Road home as theꞌ1938 Hurricane approached, but fortunately a caretaker managed to get her on the train from Westhampton to New York City before the hurricane struck. She became a local celebrity as a result of being listed in the New York newspapers the next day as “missing.”

The year following the ’38 Hurricane, her parents sold their Dune Road home and purchased the historical Main Street homestead built by the Howell family in 1742.

In January 1942, she married Derick W. Betts of Englewood, New Jersey, and Quogue. During World War II, while her husband served in the U.S. Navy, she resided with her parents at the Main Street homestead and volunteered as a nurse’s aide at the hospital in Riverhead.

After the end of World War II, she and her husband built a home on Homans Avenue, Quiogue, and became full-time local residents.

Subsequent to the death of her husband in 1969, she embarked on the last phase of her life with the independence, energy and zest for which she was widely known and admired, survivors said.

She won the women’s golf championship at the Westhampton Country Club in 1979, the same year that her son, Gair, won the men’s championship—a mother-son feat yet to be replicated.

She was active in sports almost to the end. In her 90th year, she was still playing 18 holes of golf, bowled a 200, and each morning walked a mile or 2 on the treadmill at SportTime.

She is survived by her four children, Rick, Gair, Bobbie and Whit; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband, Derick W. Betts, and two siblings, Robert E. Gill and Mary Gill Roby, predeceased her.

Memorial donations may be made to the Westhampton Beach Historical Society, Box 686, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978, or East End Hospice, Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.

Two Flee After Hampton Bays Crash, Evade Police Search

Two occupants of a car that fled from police then crashed into another vehicle near Slo Jack’s in Hampton Bays evaded an extensive police search and are still at large. Southampton Town Police say that one of their officers had witnessed a 2022 Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed in Hampton Bays on Friday afternoon and attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to pull over and sped up. For safety reasons, the officer broke off his pursuit, as is standard police practice in instances where no immediate threat to the public is suspected. ... 3 May 2024 by Staff Writer

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Police were called, but as one town official pointed ... 1 May 2024 by Editorial Board

Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits.
