Barbara Rae Horton of Southampton died on April 22 at The Westhampton Care Center. She was 71.
Ms. Horton, “Rae,” as she was affectionately known, was born January 17, 1950 in Norristown, Pennsylvania to the late Robert and Anna C. Horton.
She graduated from AD Eisenhower High School in 1968. After high school, she attended Ursinus College, in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and Suffolk County Community College. She worked for PSFS Bank, Hewlett-Packard, Verizon and owned her own house cleaning business.
Ms. Horton lived in both Norristown and Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, before moving to the Shinnecock Indian Nation to care for her father. As a member of the Shinnecock Nation, she attended the Suffolk County and the Town of Southampton citizen police Academies to help foster better community relations between the Nation and locals.
She was a member of the Eastern Long Island chapter of the NAACP, and very active in tribal affairs, sitting on a host of committees, such as the Council of Elders, Governance Committee, Mocomanto Scholarship Committee, CTAS Steering Committee, Shinnecock Public Safety Advocate and Powwow Committee.
She was an active member in the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church, where she briefly served as treasurer. Ms. Horton took several courses to be certified in administering the Narcan rescue medication for drug overdoses, and also volunteered in Ellen’s Foundation (Ellen’s Run) for breast cancer awareness on the East End.
Although Ms. Horton lived on the Shinnecock Reservation, she often visited the family back in the Norristown area, always bringing gifts for everyone. She enjoyed playing games of knowledge and could answer almost all of Jeopardy questions. She could be witty, quirky, sarcastic and extremely creative, in addition to being knowledgeable about everything, her family said.
She was predeceased by her brothers Robert Henry, Thomas Morgan, Ronald Corley and Michael Wayne.
Ms. Horton is survived by her brothers, Richard Allen, Peter Timor, Stephen Walter (Frances), John Keith (Pamella) and James Gregory; her sisters, Hanoi Avis Crews (James), Alison Jane Reynolds, Linda Ann Harrison (George), Suzanne Consuelo Lake; and a host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cousins, Jacqueline Corley, Joyce Corley, Walter Corley and John Corley; as well as Donald Williams Sr., her father Robert Horton’s only living first cousin.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 22, at 11 a.m. at The Shinnecock Presbyterian Church on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation.
