Barry Lee Scholz of Winthrop, New York, died on December 16, 2016, from cancer. He was 67.
Born on August 12, 1949, in Southampton, he was a 1967 graduate of Hampton Bays High School. After attending Southampton College, he moved upstate and continued his education at SUNY Canton, earning a degree in construction technology. Mr. Scholz was a master carpenter and, as the owner of his own construction company, he built several fine homes in the Canton-Potsdam area.
He was also an active member of the New Hope Community Church in Potsdam where he served as a deacon and a greeter. With the missions committee, he led a construction team to build a church on the Fiji Islands. He also planned and supervised the installation of a commercial grade kitchen at Helping Hands, which provides support for those in need in the North Country.
Mr. Scholz is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judith LaVine; and a son, Jason Andrew of Winthrop; his mother, Marian Davis Scholz; and two sisters, Lori Scholz and Karen Scholz Andrews and husband Stuart, all of Hampton Bays; and a nephew, Derek Andrews of London.
He was predeceased by his father, Theodore Scholz.
A memorial service was held at New Hope Community Church in Potsdam on December 29.
