All Hampton Bays boys indoor track head coach Vincenzo Battaglia wanted to see from his athletes on Saturday at the League V Championships at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood was improvement from last year’s meet.
He got it.
The Baymen, who were in second place going into the relays, totaled 59 points to finish in fourth place in the league, well surpassing the 33 points and seventh place finish from a year ago.
“Definitely a big jump and step up for the team overall,” Battaglia said. “We had 18 PRs with 20 athletes, so pretty much everybody who competed came to play that day.”
The Baymen swept the 55-meter dash, with Eli Amos winning it in a new school record 6.67 seconds, surpassing Darwin Fernandez’s 2021 record of 6.70 seconds. Matthew Papajohn placed second in 6.83 seconds and Charlie Garcia third in 6.86 seconds. Amos, Garcia and Papajohn, respectively, had swept the preliminary race as well. Battaglia said Garcia was ranked eighth going into the race so he made a huge improvement.
Papajohn also won the 300-meter dash in 37.94 seconds and Garcia placed third in 38.54 seconds. Amos, Papajohn, Garcia and Osman Milian Jr. won the 4x200-meter relay in 1:37.95. Both 4x400- and 4x800-meter relays placed fifth.
Liam Sutton placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.11 seconds and Joffre Proano rounded out the scoring placements for Hampton Bays, finishing sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet 1 ½ inches.
Battaglia said he wasn’t sure if his team has the depth to compete with some of the bigger schools at the upcoming Small Schools Championships on February 4, but he’s confident that many of his athletes can compete individually in certain events, not only for Small Schools titles, but possibly for a county title or a chance to head to states.
Hampton Bays junior Emma Halsey won the 55-meter hurdles in 9.33 seconds at the girls League V Championships, which were Sunday at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood. She finished second in the preliminary race in 9.52 seconds. Halsey, the only point scorer for the girls at the meet, also placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet 8 ½ inches.
Sofia Galvan, a sophomore, finished just outside of a scoring placement, finishing seventh in the 1,000-meter race in 3:30.93. The 4x200-meter race also finished seventh in 2:03.16.
