Bernadette Church of East Hampton died December 27, 2016. She was 71 and had Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Ms. Church was born May 15, 1945 in St. George’s, Grenada, the daughter of Ralph C. Batson and the late Kathleen H. Baird. She moved to the United States in the late 60s and lived in Brooklyn, then Sag Harbor, and finally East Hampton, until her illness progressed. She worked for Bridgehampton National Bank and Catholic Guardian Society of East Hampton.
Ms. Church was a dedicated member of the East End Church of Christ and served joyfully and tirelessly for many church related functions. Survivors said she enjoyed helping others and cooking for all her family while telling jokes and stories. Her smile was contagious, they said.
She is survived by her father, Ralph C. Batson; her stepmother, Marjorie Margaret Batson; two sons, Eric Church and Winston Church Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Ann Church; and three granddaughters, Ava, Mya and Ella Church. She is also survived by two aunts, Esther Edwards and Edith Edwards of Florida; four brothers, Reginald Baird of New Hampsire, Trevor Baird of East Hampton, Gordon Batson of Queens and Carlyle Batson of Virginia; two sisters, Tracy Yarbrough of Texas and Paula Mathurine of Brooklyn; seven cousins, Pamela Baird, Estelle Edwards, Reynold Edwards, Agustus Edwards, Winston Edwards, Ricky Edwards and Glen Edwards; a brother-in-law; three sisters-in-law; 10 nephews; 12 nieces; nine grand-nephews; six grand-nieces; two great-grand-nephews; and one great-grand-niece. She was predeceased by a brother, Michael Baird.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 7, at noon at the East End Church of Christ, 500 Sag Harbor Turnpike, East Hampton, followed by burial at Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor.
