Bernard Green of East Hampton died on October 6 at NYU Langone Hospital in New York City after complications from surgery. He was 57.

Mr. Green was born in Cork City, Ireland, on May 8, 1963. He received his training and professional degree as a hair stylist at Alan International in London in 1984, emigrating shortly thereafter to the United States to be with his life-long partner and husband, John Brancati.

He worked for salons in New York City for a number of years before co-owning his own salon, Kathe/Bernard on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. He settled permanently in East Hampton in 2004 when Mr. Brancati opened the beloved East End Books on The Circle in East Hampton, where he often helped host events. Once out east, he was a leading stylist for Kevin Maple Salon in Southampton and later at Salon Xavier in Sag Harbor, with a dedicated roster of clients following him, many of whom became lifelong friends.

He enjoyed cooking, reading, traveling and spending time with his dogs on the beach. Mr. Green was a devoted friend to a select and lucky group, according to his family, who noted that he never missed a child’s birthday, the chance to celebrate an accomplishment or to offer heartfelt support during times of difficulty.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Church in East Hampton, where he and Mr. Brancati were married in 2014, to the delight of many who witnessed their devotion to each other for more than 30 years, his family said.

In addition to his husband, his survivors include his family in Cork City, his extended family in the United States, and friends who will all miss his remarkable spirit, warm smile and brilliant blue eyes, his family said.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

The Gift of Life

All local stories matter. They matter to some portion of readers, and they certainly matter to the journalists sharing them. But there’s always an article that hits home a little more than others. Bill Sutton, who is the managing editor of The Express News Group, was never comfortable being in the pages of our newspapers. But he agreed, because his story is so important — and can help so many others — because he needs a donor kidney. He’s not alone: There are some 100,000 people in the United States alone who need life-saving organ donations. It’s testament to modern ... 4 Jun 2025 by Editorial Board

A Place To Play

Shinnecock Hills and Tuckahoe make up a mecca for golfers, with four world-class golf courses shoulder to shoulder: Shinnecock Hills, the National Golf Links of America, Sebonack and Southampton. Sebonack is the new kid on the block, opened in 2006 and designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak, but it’s already developed an international reputation, hosted a Women’s U.S. Open and made the list of the nation’s 100 best courses. Nearby are The National, which dates to 1911, and Shinnecock Hills, founded in 1891, the celebrity courses that every golfer knows and dreams of playing. Southampton, though, is the overachieving ... by Editorial Board
