Best of Summer
Asking a photographer to choose their favorite pics is like asking a parent to choose their favorite child. Each and every one is special, otherwise they would never have made it out of the camera, or, in the case of this photographer, the iPhone.
But when one looks at a body of work limited to a specific time, place or moment, there are definitely standouts.
The goal of this summer’s “Southampton SEEN” column was to indeed capture moments, and to filter them through the lens of fashion, color and other specifics of expression. If one is searching for any kind of subliminal messaging through dress, the answer can be found in the words of the late, great New York Times photojournalist Bill Cunningham, who is clearly the angel on the shoulder of this feature. He famously said, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”
And, boy, was armor essential this summer: From rancid politics and frightening attacks on fundamental human rights, to gun violence against innocent children, to matters of public health, the onslaught of awfulness seemed daily and ofttimes numbing.
Yet folks still managed to carry on, whether ignorantly oblivious or deeply disturbed, at least in their manner of dress. While individual personalities might have shone through in the photography, the actual people were purposely left unidentified. It was more about that wonderful gown in motion, perhaps a winning smile, the visible expression of joy, or something completely random.
For whatever reason a photo was selected, there was palpable joy at least on one side of the camera, and that belonged to this writer. Thanks to all for their beautiful smiles, engaging outfits, and incredible patience in allowing a crazy guy with an iPhone to stalk restaurants, parties, streets and beaches in pursuit of those magical moments.
You will be SEEN again.
