Neighbors in Support of Immigrants is planning its fourth annual Bicycle Recycling Day.
The project started as a way to provide transportation to summer jobs for teens and families who have no car or just one car. This year, NISI will work with the Long Island Bicycle Cooperative whose volunteers will repair bikes in any condition preparing them to give away. This year the cooperative has promised 50 road-ready bikes, more than has been collected before. In return, NISI we will collect used bikes, as it has done in the past, and give them to the cooperative.
Volunteer Jim Dreeben will pick up bikes and deliver them to the coop, but help is needed. Volunteers who can give a few hours or a day to the project, and those with bicycles to donate should email supportimmigrants@gmail.com.
The Bicycle Recycling Day, at which the bikes will be distributed is Sunday, May 4, from noon to 2 p.m. at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays.
