A close-quarters mark rounding with Venetia Satow and crew William Bateman (sail #2519), center stage. MICHAEL MELLA
From left, Caitlin Cummings (crew: Elizabeth Cummings), second place Charlotte LeClue (sail #2037, crew: Josh LeClue), Jennifer Theiss (crew: Jennifer Amos Taylor), Sky Lilly Charles (crew: Breckin Lehnert), Amelia Steelman (crew: Derrick Galen) all sailing “wing and wing” for the leeward mark. MICHAEL MELLA
With the red-flagged committee boat anchoring the left side, a brilliant start is spread across the horizon. First place Venetia Satow is third from right; second place Charlotte LeClue is fourth from right. MICHAEL MELLA
Fourth place Sara Nightingale, owner of a prestigious downtown Sag Harbor art gallery, with Katherine Kalbacher on the jibsheet, second from left (sail #2018) heading for the weather mark. MICHAEL MELLA

Close-quarter drill at the weather mark with Breakwater stalwart Sinéad FitzGibbon (sail #3511) and crew Mike Orchard center stage. MICHAEL MELLA
As second place Charlotte LeClue deftly demonstrates, the skipper has two jobs: steering the boat and “manning” the mainsheet, while her brother Josh fine-tunes the jibsheet. MICHAEL MELLA
Breakwater’s 18 year-old wunderkind Venetia Satow, shown here at last year's race, with William Bateman on the jib, having scored “bullets” in three out of six races put them in first place by a huge margin. Most of her competitors have been sailing since they were young kids; Venetia started just three years ago. She has packed a decade of aggressive sailboat training and racing into those three years. Her current regimen is five days a week, being coached by two collegiate sailors at the Shelter Island Yacht Club. Keep an eye on Venetia, an Olympics-bound gal! MICHAEL MELLA
