The weather gods blessed the Breakwater Yacht Club’s Rocket/Sunfish regatta on May 7 with a truly stellar day. Westerlies, varying between 10 and 14 knots, powered the fleet around the marks on Sag Harbor in photo-op fashion.
On Mother’s Day, it was just as beautiful, while the Greek God of the Winds played havoc on the race course. Direction? During the six-race regatta it veered 45 degrees, from north to due west. Velocity? Two to 6 knots, with an opposing current!
Michael Mella, running the race committee boat while shooting, witnessed boats going backward at the start of the second race. In such trying conditions, the highly skilled skippers showed their mettle in spades.
