Brendan J. Smith of Hampton Bays succumbs to cancer at 32

Brendan J. Smith, a lifelong resident of Hampton Bays, died at his home on March 1, following a long battle with cancer. He was 32.

Mr. Smith was born in Riverhead on November 23, 1977 to George and Kathleen Smith.

A graduate of Hampton Bays High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 2000 to 2004. During that time he served two tours of duty in Iraq.

He owned B. Smith Carpentry Co. and worked for several clients throughout the East End.

Recently, family and friends recalled his fondness for the New York Mets, his love of performing as a Drum Corporal for the Eastern Long Island Police Pipe and Drum Band and the joy he derived from playing for the Town of Southampton and MLC Landscaping men’s softball leagues.

He is survived by his wife, Heather (née Murray) Smith of Hampton Bays; a son, Seamus Michael Smith, and a daughter, Marin Grace Smith, both of Hampton Bays; his grandmother, Regina MacBride of Hampton Bays; a brother, Michael Smith and his wife Jennifer of East Quogue; a sister, Kathleen Edgar and her husband Derrick of Southampton; nieces and nephews Delaney Smith, Finbar Smith, Emily Edgar and Kevin Edgar; and in-laws Bruce, Cynthia and Nancy Murray, Craig, Kirk, Pam and Guy Black and their children, Morgan, Katie, Sam and James Black.

The family received visitors on March 3 at J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays, where additional visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, and Monsignor Edmond Trench, retired pastor of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton, will lead a prayer service at 3 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 5, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Rosalie’s Roman Catholic Church in Hampton Bays. Immediately following funeral services, interment with military honors will be held at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Brendan Smith Children’s Memorial Fund, Suffolk County National Bank, 295 North Sea Road, Southampton, N.Y. 11968 would be appreciated by the family.
