Someone recently told me that no other month begins or ends on the same day of the week as May in any one year. I never would have noticed that on my own. However, I do know that this month is a great time to see the planet Saturn. You won’t need a telescope or binoculars to view Saturn on or around May 10 when the planet will be especially bright, but those instruments will enable you to see Saturn’s rings. Look for the planet in the east, just as the sun sets. It will be visible all night as it travels across the sky, until it finally sinks below the western horizon just before sunrise.While you’re gazing at the beauty above us, don’t forget to take a gander at the Nathaniel Rogers House, where restoration work has resumed on the historic building. In addition, Judy Musnicki and her family have decided to donate a beautiful copper beech tree to the Bridgehampton Museum, to be planted on the grounds of the Nathaniel Rogers House in memory of Judy’s husband, Jack.
Main Street also has a new addition. I’ve noticed that the Chase Edwards Fine Art Galleries opened last month. It’s located at 2463 Main Street and presents works of established and emerging talents in the world of contemporary art. Gallery owner Bonnie Elizabeth Edwards recently told me that she is hoping to work closely with other local business owners in developing new ideas and activities on Main Street to entice more folks to visit and support all of our local businesses. The store hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with evening hours for strollers and events for the coming busy season.
Several local organizations are offering events this coming week. The Southampton Trail Preservation Society (STPS) will be holding their monthly meeting on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in the lower conference room of Southampton Town Hall, 116 Hampton Road. All are welcome! For further information, call (631) 283-2638. Then on Saturday, May 3, from 10 to 11 a.m., STPS will be hosting a moderately paced 1.7 mile hike on the Whiskey Hill Loop. The Children’s Museum of the East End (CMEE) is holding its 5th annual Peconic Family Fun Day this Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. till noon, rain or shine. They’re working with several other local organizations in order to connect children with nature in a fun, accessible way. The event will educate families with children age 5 to 10 about water management, agricultural sustainability, recycling, and environmental stewardship. There is no cost to attend.
Looking ahead, volunteers are starting to line up to help out at the “Hamptons Marathon and Half,” being held on May 10. If you want to volunteer, you can contact Amanda at amanda@bridgehamptonhalf.com.
Later that same Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., the Bridgehampton Museum is offering a performance by jazz’s legendary tenor saxophonist Houston Person at the BH Museum’s Archives, 2539-A Montauk Highway. The next week the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons will be hosting its annual Preview Party on Friday, May 16, and its annual Spring Garden Fair on Saturday, May 17. Both events will be held at the Bridgehampton Museum, 2368 Montauk Highway. Trees, shrubs, roses, perennials, and annuals will be offered for sale. A silent auction on Friday night will include planted containers prepared by HAH members and the local professional horticultural community. Admission is $60 on Friday evening with wine and hors d’oeuvres beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is free on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call (631) 537-2223 or email hahmember@optonline.net.
And looking further ahead, the Bridgehampton Association’s annual Benefit Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at the Bridgehampton Club on Ocean Road. Anyone wishing to get together a foursome to compete with other civic and enthusiastic players may call Pat at (931) 764-7805 to sign up. Cost is $125 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, a buffet breakfast and lunch. The rain date is the following day, May 22. All proceeds from the event go to the Bridgehampton Association. There will also be a raffle in connection with the tournament. Volunteers will be selling chances on weekends before the event in front of several local businesses. Chances are $2 each or a book of six for $10. Winners do not have to be present to win.
And don’t forget, the Kentucky Derby is always held on the first Saturday in May, so this year this famous horse race, which dates back to 1875, will be held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 3. Then on May 5, or Cinco de Mayo, Mexicans celebrate the Battle of Puebla in Mexico, when the Mexican militia was victorious over the French army in the battle that took place in 1862.
