A group of more than a dozen Boy Scouts from Troop 58 in Southampton seemed to be having a great time when I swung by their campsite near Kellis Pond on Saturday morning. Led by Scoutmasters Tac Hostetter, Tim Behringer, Thom Speckenbach and Bob Howard, with a helping hand from Brad Allen of Long Island Crane, the group was busy assembling a new osprey platform that they erected alongside the pond. Let’s hope it finds some suitable tenants come springtime.
Hats off to the adult volunteers. I know that trying to keep a bunch of boys focused is, to borrow a phrase from John Lennon, about as easy as shoveling smoke with a pitchfork in the wind, but these guys managed to keep those boys on task while giving them some useful instruction with tools and safe construction practices. Bravo, gentlemen.
Congratulations to Luke Hopping, a senior at the Ross School and the son of John and Donna Hopping of Lumber Lane, who won the Best Delegate Award at the Model United Nations Conference at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, last weekend.
At the conference, he represented the Holy Roman emperor in a historic committee on the Third Crusade. Luke received a gavel and a certificate for his effort.
This is his second win as Best Delegate. Last year at Northeastern University, Luke received the award with fellow Ross student Nathaniel Oppenheimer for their portrayal of France at the most competitive council within the conference, the United Nations Security Council I. Luke will defend his title at the next conference he will attend in the spring at Northeastern University.
William Carlson, the son of Larry and Jody Carlson, who is a freshman at Kenyon College in Ohio, performed on trumpet with the school’s jazz ensemble at its fall concert. The group performed the music of Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and other jazz greats.

The Bridgehampton Historical Society is looking for photographs of and actual examples of the kind of trade wagons and carts that used to traverse South Fork roadways for an upcoming exhibit. These local supply lines carried basic needs such as meat, milk, produce, coffee, tea and ice to residents.
If you own one of these old carriages, or know where one is stored, the Bridgehampton Historical Society would be delighted to document it. If you have any photographs or items relating to local merchants, please contact BHHS Archivist Julie Greene.
Documents and photographs will be promptly duplicated by the society and returned to their owners.
For more information, call (631) 537-1088.
