Bruce Addison of Sag Harbor died in West Palm Beach, Florida, on March 31. He was 89.

Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on June 21, 1925, he was raised in West Hartford, Connecticut. He attended the University of Connecticut and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. His professional career started in Manhattan selling advertising for Sports Illustrated. He was the founding president and CEO of PW Communications Inc., a professional medical publishing group. He was a resident of Southampton from 1961, and had also lived in Sag Harbor and on North Haven. He had lived in West Palm Beach since 1993.

His family described him as “the original renaissance man, who did everything at an extraordinary level, and had fun at doing it all. He was the life of the party. He was avid golfer and tennis player, and enjoyed all that the East End had to offer.”

Mr. Addison planted and maintained fruit and vegetable gardens on the family’s Southampton property, and especially enjoyed the many summers that he lived on his boat, moored at Barons Cove Marina in Sag Harbor.

Mr. Addison is survived by four sons, Bruce W. Addison of Manhattan and Glen Cove, Matthew Addison of Texas, Anthony Addison of Manhattan and Southampton, and Blake Addison of California; and five grandchildren, Dieter, Virginia, Anabelle, Grace and Carolina Addison.

Services were private.

Melon Envy

The ants come out of the tub drain like they do every summer. I know why this happens, and it does not alarm me. The colony parades across the porcelain swath, up the 90-degree incline of the basin and over the edge. Those with wings make for the window that’s open with its screen removed. The wingless descend to the floor: a crack in the grout, the entrance to a tunnel that takes them to the cinder block “freeway” beneath my house.
