Bruno Akner died at Southampton Hospital on December 18, 2017, after a long illness, with loved ones at his side. He was 86.
Mr. Akner was well known in the community as a counselor at the Seafield Recovery Center in Westhampton Beach for more than 20 years. As the adviser for special restricted meetings for police officers, firefighters and paramedics, he guided many members of the uniformed services in their journey for sobriety, according to his life partner, Patricia Newman, and Mark Epley, CEO of Seafield and former mayor of the Village of Southampton.
Mr. Epley said Mr. Akner was very dedicated to his patients, offering life-saving treatment in a very honest, straight-forward manner, tempered with a gentle sense of humor.
Ms. Newman added that Mr. Akner served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a marksman instructor from 1951 through 1953.
A funeral Mass was held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Quiogue on December 20.
