When all nine of its varsity teams made their respective postseasons, it’s tough to pick a team or individual to lead a list of Westhampton Beach postseason honorees. But Max Haynia had a cross country season for the record books.

After helping the Hurricane boys win the League V title, Haynia won Division III and Suffolk County Class B titles prior to claiming the New York State Class B Championship, joining Kevin Hogan in 1989 as the only other Westhampton Beach boy to ever win a state title. Haynia then went on to win the Nike Cross Regionals to qualify for Nike Cross Nationals where his season finally ended in mid-November. Trevor Hayes also had a very good season and was there pretty much every step of the way Haynia was. Battling an injury for much of the postseason, Hayes was All-State, All-County, All-Division and All-League.

The Westhampton Beach girls cross country team also had a strong season, finishing in second place in League V behind East Hampton. Oona Murphy and Caeden Dorn were both All-County and All-League. Jamie Kelly and Gabby Wendel were All-Division and All-League.

Matilda Buchen and Julia Stabile, after winning Division IV and Suffolk County doubles championships, reached the quarterfinals of the New York State Championships and were therefore All-State. Melina Pinonzek was All-County, Ana Way, Kylie Way, Ava Borruso and Shannon Killoran were All-Division and Taylor Lagattolla, Nikki Lee, Zoe Grellet-Aumont and Julia Greiner were All-League. The Hurricanes split the League IV title with Ross and William Floyd and were given the Team Sportsmanship Award. Matt Reed was named League IV Coach of the Year.

The Westhampton Beach football team reached the Suffolk County Division III Championship this fall, when it lost to Sayville. Brody Schaffer was named Second Team All-State and Second Team All-Long Island while teammates Noah Hebberd and Andrew Mensch were named Fourth Team All-State. Hebberd, Mensch and Will Gambino were named All-County. Schaffer, Gianni Amodemo, Jordyn Brown, Sal Fracapane, Aidan McDermott, Nolan Michalowski and Kevin Smith were each named All-Division. Fracapane was named the Hurricanes Most Valuable Player of the Suffolk County Championship Game.

Zach Berger and Owen Jessop each qualified for the New York State Boys Golf Championships, which aren’t until June, and led the Hurricanes all season long. Berger and Jessop won the Sebonack Challenge, the fifth straight Westhampton Beach pair to do so. Berger and Jessop were All-County, All-Conference and All-League. Charlie Beasley was also All-Conference and All-League.

The Westhampton Beach girls volleyball team went 12-4 in League V to easily reach the Suffolk County Class A playoffs, where the team defeated Harborfields in the first round before falling to Sayville in the county semifinals. Lauren Goss was named All-County, Reilly Mahon was named All-Conference and Christie Stevkovski, Sydney Anastasia, Karly Pascale and Shannon Sweet each earned All-League honors. Interim head coach Eric Ferrante was named League V Coach of the Year.

After a 5-9 season competing among the top teams in Suffolk County, the Hurricane boys volleyball team qualified for the Division II postseason, and defeated Bayport-Blue Point at home in a playoff outbracket game before losing to Eastport-South Manor in the county semifinals. Declan Kerns was the team’s All-County selection, and he was also named to the All-County Tournament Team and was All-County Academic. Daniel Gosnell and Gavin Vander Schaaf were named All-County Academic Elite with Vander Schaaf being the recipient of the Suffolk County Boys Volleyball “Making A Difference” Scholarship Award. Casey Sidor was All-Division and made the All-County Tournament team.

The Westhampton Beach girls soccer team ended what was a 13-year playoff drought after going 8-6-1 overall. The Hurricanes lost their first round playoff matchup at Hauppauge. Sarah Gormley was named Fourth Team All-State, League IV Player of the Year and All-County. Amanda Shannon was also named All-County, Katie Baker and Lily Strebel were All-League and Emily Tully earned All-County Academic honors.

After going 5-5 in League IV, the Westhampton Beach boys soccer team qualified for the playoffs, where it lost in overtime at Shoreham-Wading River in the first round. Kade Murphree was named All-County and All-Conference for his efforts throughout the season, while Ethan Vogt was named All-Conference. Chance Brindle and Lincoln O’Connell were named All-League and Amner Rosales as All-County Academic.

Eight of the nine Westhampton Beach varsity teams earned NYSPHSAA Scholar-Team Award for having an average of 90 or better. Those teams included girls soccer (97.26), girls tennis (97.09), girls cross country (96.98), boys golf (96.57), girls volleyball (96.17), boys cross country (95.59), boys volleyball (95.19) and football (94.06). The fall athletic teams had a combined GPA of 96.11.
