C. Joseph Hallinan Jr., Formerly Of East Quogue, Dies May 12

C. Joseph Hallinan Jr. of Milford, formerly of East Quogue, died May 12 at his home. He was 87.

Mr. Hallinan was born on November 27, 1927, in New York City, the son of the Clement Joseph Hallinan Sr. and Lillian (Lesure) Hallinan. He was an attorney in New York specializing in the trial of criminal and civil cases and in international law.

He was raised in Plainville, Connecticut, and graduated from Plainville High School, where he played football and was an All State quarterback. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Korea, where he served as a member of the Army Counter Intelligence Corps and was honorably discharged. He continued his education and received his undergraduate degree at the College of the Holy Cross and a doctorate from Fordham University School of Law. After he completed his education, he began his career in the office of the United States Attorney of New York, was Special Assistant Attorney General of the State of New York, and then went into private practice, where he developed a diverse career.

He had a love of language and was dedicated to expanding his knowledge and use of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French. He served as legal advisor to 12 Latin American consulates and was named honorary consul to Costa Rica in 1992. He received the Bernardo O’Higgins Award from Chile for his service to the Chilean-American community. He was also an avid fan of Notre Dame football and enjoyed his leisure time at the Surf Club of Quogue.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Patricia (Gormley) Hallinan. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Casey and husband John Jr. of Milford; a son, William Hallinan of New York; three grandchildren, John R. Casey III, Ashlinn P. Casey and Robert M. Cummings III; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Lillian Sabel, and a brother, Jeremiah Hallinan, predeceased him.

A memorial Mass will be held on June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Milford. Interment will be private. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gregory F. Doyle Funeral Home in Milford; visit www.gregoryfdoylefuneralhome.com to leave condolences.
