Calvin M. Smith
Calvin M. Smith died on March 12 at his home in Bridgehampton. He was 85.
Born on August 11, 1927, he was the eldest son of Dr. Louisa Brown and Leonard Smith of Bridgehampton.
At the age of 19, Mr. Smith enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 25th Infantry Division in Japan. In 1957, he joined the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, where he worked for 30 years. He was the head of the Environmental Sanitation Service in Riverhead when he retired in 1987.
Mr. Smith enjoyed outdoor life and nature and was active with the Southampton Trail Preservation Society. He was one of the first “adventurers” planning and clearing many of the now popular trails, and lead walks for many years.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Cecile; two brothers, Leland and his wife Marion of Bridgehampton, and Lewis and his wife Carole of Salt Lake City; his daughter, Athena Travlos and her husband Nickolas; and three grandchildren Alexia, Jason and Anthony of Chios, Greece.
The family received friends at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor on March 18. Interment was at the Calverton National Cemetery.
