Longtime Amagansett native Caroline Abrams Griffiths died on February 18, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Bridgehampton with her family and long-time caretaker, Eunice “Nicey” Nunus, and friend Nancy Jones, by her side. She was 91, and left a wealth of lessons and memories for her family and friends to enjoy, survivors said.

Born on April 24, 1926, at the King family homestead on Old Montauk Highway in Amagansett, she was the daughter of Abner Morton King and Amagansett matriarch Marietta “Mary Mort” Abrams. She was last of 13 children that included Egbert King, Alfred King, Abner King, Virgil King, Dorothy Ammon, Marietta Conklin, Hugh King, Harold King, Sarah Wethy, Eva Lester, Isadora King and Frances King.

She married James E. Griffiths of Babylon and Amagansett on October 22, 1944. Together, they raised six sons and one daughter at their home on Old Montauk Highway in Amagansett. She was that matriarch of the Griffiths family who could cook boiled cake or shift a manual vehicle better than anyone you may know. Although she stood at only 5 ft. 3 in., her strength and resiliency were readily apparent. She successfully raised seven children: Everett Griffiths of Sweden, Lyle Griffiths of East Hampton, John Griffiths of East Hampton, Clark Griffiths of East Hampton, Caroline Kalish of Bridgehampton, Kerry Griffiths of East Hampton and Tracy Griffiths of East Hampton.

On September 27, 1976, her husband died of a heart attack at the age of 50. After his death, she took a job as a chambermaid at the Sea Crest Hotel in Amagansett to support herself and her youngest son. Over the years, the family was expanded to include nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, to whom she was affectionately known as “Granny Griff.” By year 1992, she met her longtime boyfriend, Edward Welles. They were happily together until his death on March 27, 2007.

Mrs. Griffiths is survived by her seven children; nine grandchildren, Scott Griffiths, Belinda Griffiths-Daige, Emily Hernandez, Mandy Frazier, Molly Davis, Jillian Griffiths, Jocelin Kalish, James Griffiths and Drew Griffiths; and eight great-grandchildren Haley Hernandez, Robert James Hernandez, Tyler Van Slyke, Amiya Bennett, Emma Davis, Natalie Davis, Christopher Davis and Bella Griffiths.

Visitation was held on February 20, 2018 at Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. A graveside service was held on February 21 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Amagansett.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978-7018, or a charity of your choice.

A Brilliant Light

The village was quiet last Thursday on the morning of a beautiful day, the beginning of many more. People were scattered on benches resting and talking; reading The Press, or rising reluctantly to go about mundane errands. I sat savoring the sleepy peaceful morning when I sensed a luminosity rising and surrounding the First Presbyterian Church, almost as if flowers were bursting into bloom out of a sea of blackness. Gathered on the steps of the church and flowing down to the street were masses of young people moving quietly as cars pulled up and more and more people joined ... 12 May 2025 by Staff Writer

Budgeting 101

A simple fact about the SALT deductions is being obscured with Nick Lakota’s statements in the news. If the 2017 tax rules expire, residents will once again be able to deduct 100 percent of their state and local taxes. If all New York representatives vote together, the new budget will fail. “Fighting” for a higher limit is unnecessary. The proposed reconciliation bill cuts taxes and once again has sunset rules for four years hence. This is not creating policy, it is political posturing. We need a long-term, stable tax policy. This is not the way to do it. Overall budgeting ... by Staff Writer

Backroom Deals

Who is Jose Reyes? This question seems, by their reactions, to be the most important matter the Southampton Town Democratic Committee has to deal with. For me, and many voting citizens of Suffolk County who contact me, the question isn’t “Who is Jose Reyes?” but rather what other dark backroom deals are the Suffolk County Democrats and Republicans conspiring on. That is why the public needs people like “Jose Reyes” to come forward and shed some light on these dark deeds. To some people, 53 years ago is ancient history, but it is relevant today to remember “Watergate” and “Deep ... by Staff Writer

Keeping the Public Trust

By Michael Anthony, Andrea Klausner, George Lynch, Barbara Weber-Floyd The public entrance to The Southampton Press informs visitors that good journalism exists here. The walls are festooned with award plaques signifying a long history of excellence in reporting the news, sharing opinions and otherwise keeping the community well-informed. Sometimes, though, a person of ill will takes advantage of the best, and that brings us all down. On May 8, The Press published “A Note From the Editor” acknowledging that the letter writer calling himself “Jose Reyes,” sometimes from Hampton Bays and sometimes from Southampton, is a fictitious person. After members ... by Michael Anthony, Andrea Klausner, George Lynch, Barbara Weber-Floyd
