Charles W. Burgess Jr.
Charles W. Burgess Jr. died at his home in Remsenburg on April 20. He was 87.
Mr. Burgess, a graduate of Hillside High School in New Jersey, was a proud World War II Naval Air Corps veteran. He attended Montclair State Teachers College, earning both undergraduate and master’s degrees. He earned a second master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Burgess taught science and physics at Irvington High School in New Jersey for 30 years before retiring to his summer residence in Remsenburg. He was a lifetime member of the Westhampton Yacht Squadron, a member of Quantuck Beach Club, and a devoted elder of the Remsenburg Community Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Frances O. Burgess; two children, Chad Burgess and his wife Lynn of Eastport, and Bonnie Philson and her husband David of New Jersey; two grandsons, Kieth Philson and his wife Regina, and Kyle Philson; two step-grandchildren, Jessica Koehler and her husband Matthew, and Kevin Vlaun. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren,
The family will receive friends at the Follett & Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on Thursday, April 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 27, at 1 p.m. at the Remsenburg Community Presbyterian Church, Main Street Remsenburg.
