Charles “Chic” Hedberg of Westhampton died peacefully at home on October 2. He was 90.

The youngest of four children, he was born in Brooklyn on January 28, 1933 to Marie (Mueller) and J.O. Viking Hedberg.

He attended Poly Prep in Brooklyn for high school and studied mechanical engineering at Steven’s Institute of Technology. He was a Naval aviator and flew submarine chasers (S2-F’s) off the USS Yorktown (CV-10) in the Pacific.

Hedberg’s family summered in Westhampton, where met his future wife, Margareta “Greta” Johnson, as a teenager. He proposed to her on the beach at Dolphin Lane in East Quogue, they married in 1958 and headed to California where he was stationed. Soon after, she became pregnant, and the young couple moved back East. Their first child, Victoria, was born in December 1958, and their son, Viking, in 1961.

His career included managing cooling systems for high energy physics research at Brookhaven National Laboratory and as a test engineer for Grumman Aerospace. However, his passion was the protection of the environment and social justice. His many efforts included protecting Long Island salt marshes, preventing offshore oil drilling, establishing recycling activities, supporting reproductive health rights and racial equity.

Hedberg found solace in the ocean and typically would swim daily from May through late October. With the wonderful support of the staff at Roger’s Beach, he was able to swim through 2022. An avid sailor, in winter, he could be found skating on local ponds or cross-country skiing.

Always restless, his “free time” was busy doing home improvements or landscaping projects. On retirement, he continued the property maintenance business begun with his son.

Sadly, his wife developed Alzheimer’s and he cared for her at home until her death in 2014. He was known throughout the community for his enduring love of his wife, Greta, for being spotted in his “rusty green truck,” his pilgrimages to Dolphin Lane and his passion for the ocean. Up until his mid-80s, he could be found on a roof cleaning out gutters or using his truck to move bushes. He lived independently until the age of 89 and with the support of family, friends, his church, and wonderful group of caregivers, he was able to live out his life in his home.

He is survived by his daughter, Victoria Hedberg and her partner, Karl, of Manor Park; his son, Viking Hedberg and his wife, Katie, of Plymouth, New Hampshire; his granddaughters, Laura Ceruti and her partner, Tim, and Carolyn Ceruti and her partner, Justin, all of Eastport; and his grandsons, Andrew Hedberg and his wife Dana of Wakefield, Massachusetts, and Woodrow Hedberg and his wife Jacqueline of Wilmington, Massachusetts; and three great-grandchildren, Alex, Anthony and Adrianna.

Calling hours are scheduled at Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on Saturday, October 28, from 3-6 p.m. A celebration of his life will held at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 29, at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Quogue Wildlife Refuge (quoguewildliferefuge.org) would be appreciated by the family.

A Brilliant Light

The village was quiet last Thursday on the morning of a beautiful day, the beginning of many more. People were scattered on benches resting and talking; reading The Press, or rising reluctantly to go about mundane errands. I sat savoring the sleepy peaceful morning when I sensed a luminosity rising and surrounding the First Presbyterian Church, almost as if flowers were bursting into bloom out of a sea of blackness. Gathered on the steps of the church and flowing down to the street were masses of young people moving quietly as cars pulled up and more and more people joined ... 12 May 2025 by Staff Writer

Budgeting 101

A simple fact about the SALT deductions is being obscured with Nick Lakota’s statements in the news. If the 2017 tax rules expire, residents will once again be able to deduct 100 percent of their state and local taxes. If all New York representatives vote together, the new budget will fail. “Fighting” for a higher limit is unnecessary. The proposed reconciliation bill cuts taxes and once again has sunset rules for four years hence. This is not creating policy, it is political posturing. We need a long-term, stable tax policy. This is not the way to do it. Overall budgeting ... by Staff Writer

Backroom Deals

Who is Jose Reyes? This question seems, by their reactions, to be the most important matter the Southampton Town Democratic Committee has to deal with. For me, and many voting citizens of Suffolk County who contact me, the question isn’t “Who is Jose Reyes?” but rather what other dark backroom deals are the Suffolk County Democrats and Republicans conspiring on. That is why the public needs people like “Jose Reyes” to come forward and shed some light on these dark deeds. To some people, 53 years ago is ancient history, but it is relevant today to remember “Watergate” and “Deep ... by Staff Writer

Keeping the Public Trust

By Michael Anthony, Andrea Klausner, George Lynch, Barbara Weber-Floyd The public entrance to The Southampton Press informs visitors that good journalism exists here. The walls are festooned with award plaques signifying a long history of excellence in reporting the news, sharing opinions and otherwise keeping the community well-informed. Sometimes, though, a person of ill will takes advantage of the best, and that brings us all down. On May 8, The Press published “A Note From the Editor” acknowledging that the letter writer calling himself “Jose Reyes,” sometimes from Hampton Bays and sometimes from Southampton, is a fictitious person. After members ... by Michael Anthony, Andrea Klausner, George Lynch, Barbara Weber-Floyd
