Charles Joseph Loehr, formerly of Westbury, New York, and a resident of Sag Harbor for 33 years, died on May 21 in St. James. He was 85.
Born in Manhattan on December 25, 1922, to Rose (née Prucha) and Charles F. Loehr, he served as a bench mechanic in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1943. He attended Bryant High School and was a graduate of the Academy of Aeronomics.
After his service in the U.S. Navy, he worked as lead mechanic for American Export Airlines at LaGuardia Airport for two years. He spent a year as a manufacturing foreman at Fairchild Engine and Aircraft Company in Farmingdale, moving on to Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, where his duties included work as a loftsman and layout work in the company’s experimental department, flight line services and customer relations.
In 1949, he joined Skyline Productions in Deer Park, serving as a vice president for 25 years. He relocated to Sag Harbor when he joined Shaw Aero Devices in East Hampton as director of manufacturing and project manager to the vice president for seven years. He retired as a quality assurance representative for Defense Contract Administration Services in Garden City.
He is survived by a daughter, Diane P. Hansen of St. James; two brothers, Robert Loehr and Richard Loehr; a granddaughter, Amanda Lindsey; and 13 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy A. (née Strittmatter) Loehr and a brother, Herbert Loehr.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Church in Sag Harbor.
