Charles W. Stitzer
Charles W. Stitzer of Southampton died at Southampton Hospital on Saturday, May 21. He was 92.
Born in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1919, he grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where his family owned four of the largest hotels on the oceanfront. He graduated from Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. He joined the U.S. Army as a lieutenant and ran frontline hospitals in France and Germany during World War II. When he returned home, he bought a hotel in Southern Pines, North Carolina. He became an accomplished Steeplechase horseman and rode at all the big meets in the South and in Europe. Later, he moved to Manhattan and then to Southampton, where he was a distributor for Univac, a commercial laundry and supply business.
Mr. Stitzer was a connoisseur of boats, foreign cars and good food. His favorite places to eat were Tate’s for the corn bread, Sant Ambroeus for the risotto and Catena’s for the clam chowder. The American Hotel, where he had many friends, was his favorite place to dine.
He had a vast knowledge of history, loved to tell tales about his youth and had a wonderful sense of humor.
He is survived by a brother, of Colorado, and two granddaughters.
A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
