Christopher C. Arnold Of Southampton Dies October 30

author on Nov 16, 2015

Christopher Colver Arnold died on October 30 in Southampton, where he lived. He was 52.

Mr. Arnold was born April 14, 1963, and spent his early years in Chicago, where he attended the Latin School. Later he moved east and graduated from Phillips Academy Andover. After spending a year at Rugby School in Warwickshire, England, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was an accomplished writer, composer, lyricist, event producer, photojournalist, art gallerist and collector. Survivors said he dazzled others with his knowledge—quoting Caesar in Latin, Homer in Greek or Shakespeare in rhyme—and was the life of the party with his musicality, often playing the piano and singing his own parodies of Cole Porter tunes.

Mr. Arnold worked in public relations for many years with his close friend Ted Kruckel at Ted, Inc. He co-produced events for clients including Van Cleef & Arpels, Christian Dior, InStyle, and Vanity Fair. Throughout his life, he had a passion for photography. A decades-long friendship with legendary photographer Bert Stern steered him to the art world, where he became associated with the Keszler Gallery in Southampton, a venue recognized for its local support of the artist Banksy, as documented in an HBO special. Mr. Arnold was inspired by new artists and the challenge of unusual installations at Art Miami and Art Hamptons, including transporting the wall of a building adorned with a piece by Banksy. “Moncle Chris,” as he was known by his nieces, nephews and their friends, played magic tricks, “marco polo” in the pool and card games with them.

Survivors said he was a kind and sensitive man whose sense of style, mischievous wit and generous spirit brightened every room he entered.

Mr. Arnold is survived by two brothers, Rome and Greg, and their wives, Lisa and Mona; and a nephew, Rome IV.

Memorial donations may be made to the Southampton Hospital Foundation, 240 Meeting House Lane, Southampton, NY 11968.

A memorial service is being planned for a later date.

The Bounty That Surrounds Us

When the Community Preservation Fund gets its well-earned accolades for the good it has done for the East End in the past quarter century, the focus often is on the preservation of land, keeping it from being developed and thus protecting the region from becoming too intensely suburban. Without question, that effort to maintain the region’s rural appeal is a significant, historic accomplishment. But sometimes we forget the importance of the CPF in keeping agriculture alive as a major contributor to the region’s agroeconomy, which has quality-of-life benefits of its own for both farmers and those who live among their ... by Editorial Board

East Quogue School District Budget of $32.3 Million on the Ballot Tuesday

The East Quogue School District will ask voters to approve the district’s proposed $32.3 million budget for the 2025-26 school year, which hikes spending by more than 5 percent but does not pierce the state tax cap. The proposed budget is a $1,578,988 increase in spending over the current school year’s budget, driven mostly by contractual salary hikes for staff and increasing costs of health insurance, rising tuition costs for students who attend the Westhampton Beach School District’s middle school and high school, and expanding the English language arts and science curriculum, according to the district’s budget documents. Quogue School District Budget Proposal Is $10 Million

The Quogue School District has proposed a 2025-26 operating budget of just under $10.1 million that includes a 4.5 percent increase in spending and a 3.29 percent increase in the tax levy but remains within the state-mandated tax cap. The growth in spending is driven primarily by increases in the cost of health insurance premiums, busing costs and tuition for students who have graduated from the Quogue School and moved up to the Westhampton Beach School District’s middle school and high school. To cover the nearly $1 million in additional spending over the amount that the state tax cap would ... by Staff Writer
