Clarice E. Everett

Clarice E. Everett, a longtime resident of Westhampton, died at the Westhampton Care Center on September 1, with her daughters by her side. She was 81.

Ms. Everett was born on July 4, 1930, in Tarrytown. She met and married William R. Everett Sr. on April 24, 1951, and they had 59 years together until Mr. Everett’s death in 2010. In 2003, the couple moved from Westhampton to Rapid City, South Dakota. While in South Dakota, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Rapid City. Once her husband died, she returned to Westhampton.

Ms. Everett taught vacation Bible school every summer and was the choir director at the Westhampton Methodist Church. Every Christmas, she would play a cantata for the whole congregation—she was an accomplished pianist who taught many Westhampton youths, not only how to play but how to have a true appreciation for it, said her family.

Out of all her accomplishments in life, there is one that she held high above the rest—the gift of being a mother. She had five children and is survived by them all: William R. Everett Jr. of North Carolina, Mark and his wife Nadine Everett of South Dakota, Dorothy E. Shary and her husband Christopher of Florida, Faith B. Jayne and her husband Bret of Remsenburg, and Grace K. Mulholland and her husband John of Westhampton Beach; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family held a memorial service at Westhampton United Methodist Church on Sunday, September 4.

Flag Legends

I was surprised to find out that the Betsy Ross flag is not an official flag of the United States. The case for the Betsy Ross flag’s legitimacy is one of inter-meshing legends — and it begins in Bridgehampton. Bridgehampton had a militia in 1775. John Hulbert, its leader, recruited 68 men. Congress ordered him to escort the British prisoners taken in the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga to Philadelphia, the Continental capital. Hulbert found himself in Philadelphia in late October or early November 1775. Hulbert’s flag had 13 six-pointed stars in a blue field, six stripes deep, in a diamond ... 8 Dec 2025 by Staff Writer

Insult to Injury

Environmentally minded Southampton residents should be concerned that “Madison Ave. Capital Partners” is asking the Southampton Village Zoning Board of Appeals for permission to build a long, elevated catwalk or dock across tidal wetlands at 1323 Meadow Lane — presented at the ZBA’s December 4 meeting. The ZBA appears poised to rubber-stamp it on January 15. The location could not be more sensitive. The area between the home and Shinnecock Bay is not simply a “wetland” — it is a tidal wetland system, one of the healthiest and cleanest in the bay. These wetlands flood and drain with the tide, ... by Staff Writer
