The health clubs on Suffolk Community College campuses are slated to open in mid-August, according to a college spokesman, Drew Biondo, who said this week, “We know folks are anxious to get back to their normal routine. We are, too.”
The health clubs — there’s one at the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood and one at the Eastern Campus in Northampton — along with Suffolk’s Ammerman campus in Selden all hosted vaccination points of distribution (POD) during the pandemic. “The last vaccination POD left our Michael J. Grant Campus on Friday (also the site of a health club), and our plans have been to re-open the clubs simultaneously,” Mr. Biondo said on Monday, July 12. “The college now has to re-staff — pool attendants and lifeguards — and hopes to do so by mid-August.”
There are currently no on campus programs due to the pandemic.
Boasting the East End’s first public pool, the health and wellness center at the Eastern campus opened in 2019.
The $21 million, 40,000-square-foot building features an eight-lane, 25-yard indoor swimming pool, as well as an 11,500-square-foot gymnasium with a three-lane track along its perimeter. It also includes basketball courts, a rock climbing wall, a weight training room with such exercise equipment as treadmill, elliptical and stationary bike, locker rooms and showers.
When the facility first opened in May 2019, it was only available for students at the college; by September it opened to the public, with memberships running from $220 per year for senior citizens to $275 for other adult county residents.
