At the Westhampton Garden Club's annual meeting, Roxanne Zimmer Ph.D., right, was awarded the Garden Club of America's Horticulture Commendation for her impact on the education and training of home gardeners and the founding the Suffolk Alliance of Pollinators. Joy Flynn, the club's president, right, made the presentation. As the Cornell Cooperative Extension Community Horticultural Specialist, Zimmer has trained hundreds of master gardeners who in turn have been inspired to teach others. Three years ago, she founded the Suffolk Alliance for Pollinators, now a network of organizations and people across Suffolk County creating a pollinator pathway with the support of the legislature, and educating others through workshops, free tours of native plant gardens, and seed swaps. As a clinical Instructor at Stony Brook University, she and her team have given hundreds of talks spreading the word about the vital importance of native plants, support for pollinators and the use of ecological practices.
