A record 141 incoming students donned their physician-in-training white coats for the first time at the Renaissance School of Medicine’s 2025 White Coat Ceremony on August 8 at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center. The event marked the first of many steps the students will take on their way to becoming medical doctors while matriculating at the school.
White Coat Ceremonies are tradition at many established medical schools around the nation. These ceremonies are an initiation rite and are symbolic to medicine as a profession that combines professionalism with scientific excellence, scholarship and compassionate care. The RSOM at Stony Brook University has held a white coat ceremony since 1998.

Defunded but Not Defeated

I have Brian Cosgrove, host of “The Afternoon Ramble” on WLIW 88.3 FM, to thank for turning me on to Nick Drake. I’ll expand on the latter in a moment. As some of you already know, WLIW, based in Southampton, is the latest iteration of the public radio station that began almost 50 years ago as WSCR. It was first housed in a Southampton College dormitory suite and run as a student club. Construction of a new stereo FM station began in the basement of Southampton Hall by 1978. The antenna tower was raised in January 1980, and, two months ... by Tom Clavin

VIEWPOINT: A Constitutional Crisis Requires Action

By Judi Roth The League of Women Voters of the Hamptons, Shelter Island and the North Fork is known to readers of these papers and to the community at large. We’ve marched in Southampton Village’s July 4th parade. We’ve held meetings in the libraries in Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton and Westhampton Beach. We’ve been at senior centers almost everywhere. We’ve organized and moderated debates for candidates for school boards, village and Town Trustees, the town councils, Suffolk County Legislature and Congress. We have done voter registration at street fairs and post offices, and in front of Stop & ... 11 Aug 2025 by Judi Roth

Summer Flocks

You hear them too: the geese, the honking flock, as they arrive at the first blocks of disced-down sweet corn. Fall? Is that you? Cold mornings just as the tomatoes start to ripen. The peak of growth has been reached, and now is the long run out of harvest. Two farmers chatting, lamenting the way two plantings will come at once. Many people have their focus set to the future, but farmers know that what is happening now was caused by something that happened in the past. Conversation tends to be reflective and deductive. The stalled-out spring and near-freezing June ... 5 Aug 2025 by Marilee Foster

Shunning the Gifts of the Sun

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency — our former congressman, Lee Zeldin — was positively giddy last week when he announced that he was killing his own agency’s ability to limit pollution by the U.S. oil and gas industry. “We are driving a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion to … unleash American energy, bring auto jobs back to the U.S.,” Mr. Zeldin crowed. Who knew? The EPA’s job is to help the oil and gas and auto industries? Even if we choose to dismiss prevailing science, which shows that burning fossil fuels pollutes the ... by Biddle Duke

VIEWPOINT: ‘Almost Alice’: On Lost Words and the Language of the Wild

I recently came across “The Lost Words,” a book so beautiful it felt like a spell. It swung open a door in my mind that had long been ajar — the idea that the disappearance of nature is mirrored, perhaps even preceded, by the disappearance of the words we once used to describe it. Newt. Raven. Bramble. Each name a small prayer, a key to recognition. And when those keys are lost, the locks rust shut. “The Lost Words” by Robert Macfarlane (author) and Jackie Morris (illustrator) features nature terms removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary, culled in favor of ... 3 Aug 2025 by Ella Gatfield

VIEWPOINT: Awaiting the Next Great American Hero

Configuring a short list of the most self-sacrificing American heroes to date was easy: George Washington, Margaret Fuller, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Woodrow Wilson, Helen Keller, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jackie Robinson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Neil Armstrong. Identifying the one to come next in the sequence turned out to be like searching for an element in the periodic table that should be there but isn’t — at least not yet. I will take pains, therefore, to examine only the “formula” for this missing hero. In the days and weeks following 9/11, a world horrified by the ... by Charles French

Choices Matter — So Where Are They?

Everywhere you look on the national political scene, you hear concerns regarding the health of American democracy. A decline in democratic institutions due to increased political polarization, partisan pressure on elections, such as current gerrymandering efforts in Texas, and growing inequalities in wealth and influence are often cited as threats to a thriving democracy. We have seen restrictions on voter access and politicization of election administration, expansions of executive power, increased partisan conflicts, the growing cost of campaigns, and the impact of special interests. Public trust in government has also decreased, with many feeling their representatives do not truly reflect ... by Fred W. Thiele Jr.
