MTK for Maui a Success
Navy Beach hosted a “MTK for Maui” Fundraiser Luau on August 19 and 20 to support the Hawai’i Community Foundation and the Maui Strong Fund. The event featured a Maui Strong food and drink menu, as well as live music from Rum Punch Mafia and Winston Irie. The event raised over $10,000 from the special menu, silent auction, 50/50 raffle and children’s bracelets made and sold by local kids, all of which will be donated to the Maui Strong Fund that provides flexible resources to support Maui residents impacted by the wildfires.

Great Tomato Taste-Off
Following a hiatus, Quail Hill Farm is bringing back its Great Tomato Taste-Off on Saturday, September 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. The farm is located on Deep Lane. Each year, the farm organically grows about 40 to 50 varieties of tomatoes. Tasters will rate the 44 varieties in contention this year.
Cost is $10/nonfarm members, free for farm members but contributions still accepted. Heavy rain cancels.

Red Devil Swim
East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue will host its annual Red Devil Swim at Atlantic Avenue Beach on Saturday, September 2. The rain date is September 3. The event gets its name from the red “Speedo-type” bathing suit often associated with male lifeguards and the culture of lifeguarding has long been nicknamed the “Red Devil.” Three distances will be contested: 1-mile, half-mile and quarter-mile. The events supports East Hampton Volunteer Rescue.
Online registration is open for the swim at ehvor.org/events. In addition, swimmers can register on the day of the event at Atlantic Avenue Beach beginning at 4 p.m.

Overdose Awareness Day Observed
Phoenix House will participate in International Overdose Awareness Day on Thursday, August 31, from 2 to 6:30 p.m. at its outpatient center, 287 Springs Fireplace Road. The observance will include the revealing of a new mural, Narcan training and distribution of the kits, decorating of luminary lights and a candlelight vigil for those who have died from overdose, as well as the first responders and medical professionals who often save individuals from overdose. The last hour will be devoted to conversation and connection for families and significant others impacted by substance misuse.

‘The Free Life’ Staged at LTV
LTV Studios will host “The Free Life,” a new rock opera on Thursday, September 21, at 7 p.m. The event is being held to honor Malcolm Brighton, Rodney Anderson and Pamela Brown who were the first balloonists to attempt crossing the Atlantic Ocean, which left from Springs, New York, on September 20, 1970. The giant balloon went down in a storm off the coast of Newfoundland approximately 32 hours later. The Free Life and its youthful crew were never found.

Run at Mash
The Park and Recreation Association of Sag Harbor will hold its third annual Friends & Family 5K on Sunday, September 10, at 9: a.m., starting and finishing in Mashashimuet Park.
This year’s 5K Run will benefit phase 2 of the park’s grandstand renovation, including the restoration of the locker room and updating the bathrooms to ensure they are ADA compliant and open to the public. A portion of the proceeds will also contribute to the Mashashimuet Park “Pay it Forward” scholarship.

Latino Film Festival
Sag Harbor Cinema is the first venue for the annual Latino Film Festival, celebrating its 20th anniversary and organized by OLA of Eastern Long Island, opening on September 14. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles. Other venues are the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill and the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center.

A staged reading of John Steinbeck’s “The Winter of our Discontent” will be offered at The Church on Saturday, September 9. The event, a fundraiser for the Sag Harbor Partnership and to support community outreach at Steinbeck House, will begin with a reception and followed by a dinner.

Celebrate World Shorebirds Day
The Global Shorebird Counts is held every year around World Shorebirds Day, this year on Wednesday, September 6. In observance, the South Fork Natural History Museum will offer a program, Birding with Frank, the next day, Thursday, September 7. The program demonstrates the importance of fieldwork, supports observers in improving counting skills, contributes to the increase of the number of birdwatchers and scientists monitoring shorebirds worldwide, and pledges new citizen scientists to the world’s largest bird database program.

‘Summer Finale 2023’ at Water Mill Museum
This is the last weekend to see the Quilt Show and Sale at the Water Mill before its close on September 3. Then, to close out the season, the museum will host the ninth annual Art Show & Sale by the 30-Squared Art Group. The show opens Thursday, September 7, and continues through Sunday, September 17.
The 30-Squared Art Group began in January 2015 joining forces to support art friends creating art every day for 30 days. A meet the artists reception is planned for Saturday, September 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. The Water Mill Museum is located at 41 Old Mill Road.

What’s It Worth?
Rare book specialist and Antiques Roadshow appraiser Ken Gloss will be at the Rogers Memorial Library on Thursday, September 7, at 1 p.m. for a discussion about the value of old and rare books. Gloss will talk about growing up in the book business, share some of his favorite finds, talk about enjoying “the thrill of the hunt,” and explain how he appraises books and manuscripts. He will share many fascinating anecdotes about private and institutional collecting, as well as the guidelines for building and maintaining a significant collection. Labor Day Art Show Set
The work of more than 50 members of the Southampton Artists Association will be on display during its 2023 Labor Day Art Exhibit at the Southampton Cultural Center that runs from August 30 through Sunday, September 10. Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Wellness Institute offers numerous programs all year long. Coming up is a physician supervised hypertension course, starting on Wednesday, September 6, at 9 a.m. Uncontrolled hypertension dramatically increases the risk for developing life-changing and life-threating conditions. During the one-hour course, Dr. Kathryn Saxby will teach how medications, nutrition, exercise, and other healthy activities can help lower your risks today.
Also coming up is an acupuncture circle for cancer survivors. It will meet on Thursdays starting September 7.

Library Highlights
Lee McAllister, author of “Hiking Long Island: A Comprehensive Guide to Parks and Trails,” will give a visual presentation and discussion on Long Island’s natural beauty on Wednesday, September 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Quogue Library.
The library is accepting canned food and nonperishable items through Labor Day to benefit Long Island Cares. Founded in 1980 by singer-songwriter/activist, Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares provides food to people impacted by hunger and food insecurity. It distributes more than 10 million pounds of food and supplies annually to nearly 400 member agencies in Nassau and Suffolk.
Katama Eastman Photography’s exhibit of black and white photographs will be on display at the Quogue Library gallery from August 31 to October 4, with an artist’s reception on Thursday, August 31, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Youth Advisory Committee Seeks New Members
The Town of Southampton Youth Bureau is recruiting new members to join its Youth Advisory Committee for the 2023 -24 school year. Those is grade seven through 12 are eligible. Meetings will be held every other Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with the first meeting on September 12 at the Hampton Bays Community Center, 25 Ponquogue Avenue. Preregistration is required.
Also, the Youth Bureau will be offering several programs and activities beginning Monday, September 11, at the Flanders Youth Center, 655 Flanders Road. Space is limited and preregistration is required. The weekly programs are Mondays, the FAST (Fun Activities with Snacks and Time to do homework); Tuesdays, Chess Club; Wednesdays, Discovery Club: Space Exploration; Thursday, Kids Cooking Club; and Fridays, TGIF It’s Fri-Yay!
