A Journaling Life

This summer, my garden faced tough challenges, between intense heat and sprinkler troubles. By October, the plants have given up, and so have I. This is the perfect time to take stock and plan for next year. Will I remember that the white bearded iris need to be divided and moved? Probably not. Among my many journals, I keep a garden notebook. I make a point of dating all my entries. That’s how I knew that the osmanthus, commonly known as false holly, planted across the front yard was not a fast grower as I was told. After five years ... 5 Oct 2025 by Denise Gray Meehan

Remembering a Legend

A celebration of the life of Jules Feiffer, the brilliant cartoonist, playwright and screenwriter who passed away at 95 in January, and lived and worked for decades on the East End, was just held at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. The event, “In Memory and Celebration” of Feiffer, included reflections by people who knew and loved him, with two musical performances and a multimedia presentation of photos and videos of Feiffer that included humorous comments by him. “For me, Jules will never be gone,” said his widow, Joan Holden, an author herself, writing under the name J.Z. Holden. Indeed, ... by Karl Grossman

Why I Miss Vermont

“What do you miss about Vermont?” It’s a question people often ask me when I moved back here, a place that has always been home, after living and working in the Green Mountains for two decades. First, an explanation. The return to the South Fork wasn’t so much a decision as a process. My wife and I could have seen it all through up north. We loved it, raised our family there, built a life. But over a decade ago, we began spending more time here — drawn by family, a family home, an ailing elder. There was also, of ... 30 Sep 2025 by Biddle Duke

Hawks and Doves

The hawks hunt in pairs. One cruises the length of the field at shoulder height. The arrow metaphor is apt: It cuts through the air with incredibly fast, “straight as an arrow” flight. Its partner brings up the rear, flying a bit slower, on a parallel track but along the edge of the field. When hawk one reaches dove point — a patch in the field, or the edge of the pond, anywhere some seed eaters may have congregated — the hawk flushes its prey. Hawk two, flying at a slight distance, is in a better position to chase and ... by Joseph Shaw

Nazis Next Door

“Nazis of Long Island: Sedition, Espionage & the Plot Against America,” a book authored by Christopher Verga, a professor at Suffolk County Community College — he teaches the courses History of Long Island and Foundations of American History — was published last week by The History Press, a division of Arcadia Press. Arcadia describes itself as “the largest publisher of local and regional history and culture books in the United States.” The book’s cover features a photo of “a bungalow in Camp Siegfried,” a large swastika above its front door. Camp Siegfried was in the middle of Suffolk County, in ... 29 Sep 2025 by Karl Grossman

Country Roads, Take Me Home

I love to sing at the top of my lungs while I’m driving. I love to belt out a banger like Queen’s “We Will Rock You” or a ballad like Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence.” It’s therapeutic. It’s not therapeutic for Mr. Hockey or the hockey pucks, because I can’t carry a tune. When they’re in the car, they prefer the sound of silence. I learned this in high school when I tried out for “Oklahoma!” Instead of making the chorus, I got the job of prompter and whispered forgotten lines to a 15-year-old Curly. In the words of ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Spuds and Strides

The first one to the turn is making strides. A few others are close behind, but no runner likely will pass the leader of the race. I am standing at the corner of Ocean Road and Paul’s Lane — making sure that no entrant goes off course. This is exceedingly unlikely to happen, since pretty much everyone on the 5K loop is a familiar resident of the neighborhood. But, being a potato farmer, when I was asked to volunteer, it did seem like I was symbolically obligated to stand on the corner, because they are resurrecting the original Hamptons footrace, ... 24 Sep 2025 by Marilee Foster

'Storm of the Century'

As my many — okay, my few — readers know, I enjoy anniversaries of significant events. Certainly, one of the most memorable for me marks its 40th anniversary this week: Hurricane Gloria. It was the first significant tropical cyclone to strike the northeastern United States since Hurricane Agnes in 1972 and the first major storm to affect New York City and Long Island — especially our area — directly since Hurricane Donna in 1960. We’re going to get a tad wonky here: Gloria began as a tropical wave that moved off the west coast of Africa on September 15, 1985. ... 22 Sep 2025 by Tom Clavin

Sharing the Ocean

“Eyes on the Water: Boating with Whales” is the title of a just-out and free online course put together by a group led by Carl LoBue, senior marine scientist at The Nature Conservancy, its Ocean Program director based in Cold Spring Harbor in Suffolk County. I’ve gone through the course, and it’s highly important for boaters and, most of all, for those magnificent creatures, whales. It’s atboatingwithwhales.com. It was created by LoBue and his Nature Conservancy team working with marine mammal experts from groups including the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, Gotham Whale, ... by Karl Grossman
