Of Catbirds and Robots

The catbird is back, and it’s a relief to hear his silly songs filling the hedgerow with joy. It is no joke, no hyperbole — joy is that sweet, warbling noise. The catbird is a honey-voiced mimic, Freddie Mercury to the mockingbird’s Janis Joplin. The catbird can hit it high or low, and he’ll fool you for a moment, and then he “mews.” He falls silent, looking at you as you look for him. Asparagus season started late, and furiously. If you know the stuff, if you’ve been coming eye to eye with it for 30 years, you can understand ... 14 May 2024 by Marilee Foster

I Brake for Berries

This time of year when winter’s skeletal landscape switches to spring’s glory, my fingers start to twitch. I am revisited by memories of my early years as a petty thief, a secret savior of neglected plants. When I was a kid, my mother translated “No Trespassing” signs into “Welcome, Betty.” Her father owned a real estate agency, and although my mother never worked in the business, a curiosity and love of houses and properties ran deep in her blood. After we moved to Garden City, she had a habit of driving at a snail’s pace down the tree-lined streets, pointing ... by Denise Gray Meehan

Ozone and Health

How can Suffolk County — this county jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean and far from the urban parts of the New York metropolitan area — again receive a failing grade for pollution from ozone in a report released last month by the American Lung Association? The reason we are hit with ozone is because it blows here in the wind from the New York metro area, and the Long Island Sound is also a factor. “If you live in Suffolk County, the air you breathe may put your health at risk,” declares the ALA’s annual “State of Your Air ... by Karl Grossman

AI and Writer’s Detour

I heard an English professor extolling the virtue of artificial intelligence and how his students could use it to overcome a condition he called writer’s block. AI could script that first sentence for them. He rejoiced — that elusive, frustrating first sentence is no longer the stopper on the ink bottle. Should it be funny or impactful? It must be original. Good luck. Before AI, there were other ways of coping with WB. The most successful strategy being struggling through: keep looking, keep scribbling. Getting up and going for a short walk is still the healthiest choice. And smoking, though ... 7 May 2024 by Marilee Foster

Global Warming Is Here

I was sorry not to have signed up for the upcoming Express Sessions event on climate change, which I insist on calling by its true name, which is global warming. We were first warned about it as long ago as the 1980s, and it is still going on. Arctic Sea ice continues to shrink, tornadoes show up in the Midwest more and more often, and we are due soon for another hurricane here in the East. Meanwhile, the big oil companies continue to drill for their buried assets, and the U.S. is one of the biggest oil suppliers on Earth. ... by Anthony Brandt

VIEWPOINT: Many Events, One Sag Harbor

By Gavin Menu We don’t get out much, what with work and the kids and all. My wife, the award-winning journalist Kathryn Menu, and I were raised in East Hampton, but we share a love for all things Sag Harbor after having worked at this newspaper for nearly 20 years — as its co-publishers for the last 10. So we enjoyed hitting the town for a wonderful two nights with members of the Sag Harbor community last week. Our community has been through some tough times over the last few years, with the pandemic giving way to a mountain of ... 6 May 2024 by Gavin Menu

VIEWPOINT: A Prelude to Summer

By Shari Adler Once again, as the cherry blossoms appear, so does the arrival of spring — the season notorious for being a prelude to summer. It is so easy to view and smell springtime in the Hamptons. The bay and ocean waters are as clear and smooth as glass. Our seas are crystal clear all the way to the bottom. The beaches are completely free of rubbish and debris. We see only sand and stones. Lawns are green and flowers are about to bloom. There are other harbingers of summer, most notably in the Hamptons. When approaching restaurants of ... by Shari Adler

I Know What Moms Want

Mother’s Day is next week, and I’m thrilled. The hockey pucks don’t live with us right now, so I’ll be getting what most moms want on Mother’s Day: peace and quiet. I’m lucky. Many of my friends’ adult children’s apartment leases have ended, and they’ve moved back home to save a little money until they find a new place. This stinks for my friends, because when grown kids come back, they revert to teenagers. Even the most capable adult children — those with 401Ks and car insurance — backslide. Once home, these “grownups” leave their half-empty cups on every flat ... 30 Apr 2024 by Tracy Grathwohl
