Recently, I was in a local shop that has many offerings, including myriad items, mostly clothing and a vast selection of costume jewelry. They also do jewelry repairs.
I had recently dropped off an item of jewelry for a “modification,” which I was picking up. As I was standing at the counter surveying the selection of rings and earrings, a little basket of keychains caught my eye. The key rings had little sayings on them, and one in particular stood out: “Best F-----g Friends,” with all the words spelled out.
Seriously?
This shop was not in a remote corner of town, and labeled “adults only.” I immediately thought of my three granddaughters, the oldest of whom is 13. There is no doubt in my mind that they all have heard this word, and worse, but to sell it as merchandise in what is seemingly an upscale shop, in my opinion, is simply is not acceptable.
To say that we live in a complicated world is a vast understatement: gun violence, political unrest that permeates most conversations, war tearing apart countries. Yes, it’s all out there, but perhaps we could just start small and not pollute our language with obscenities that can be seen on keychains?
