Sag Harbor Village Police were called to Bay Street Theater at about 1 p.m. on Saturday to respond to a report of protesters blocking the entrance. Police said the complaint was made by Tracy Mitchell, Bay Street’s executive director, about three hours before a forum was scheduled to be held to discuss the theater’s plans to move to a permanent home at the site of the Water Street shops complex about a block away.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a young man and woman with handwritten signs standing on the median strip at the foot of Long Wharf. The sign held by the woman, who held a small megaphone in her other hand, read “Stop Corruption.” The young man held two small signs reading “Boycott Bay Street” and “Respect Middle Class.”
Police said the two were not causing any disruption and were within their rights to protest. The pair remained at the scene until the forum began at 4 p.m.
The forum itself was also peaceful, although Bay Street’s representatives were taken to task by some for failing to identify their donors and who was buying property related to the proposed move.
