With two luxury cars stolen in two days in their jurisdiction, Southampton Town Police are once again reminding residents and visitors to lock their cars and take their keys — or fobs — with them.
The East End has been a prime target for car thieves who drive out to the area and help themselves to an array of ritzy rides parked, unlocked, and with the keys or fobs left on the console in residential driveways, say police. Striking during the overnight hours, they are often far away by the time car owners realize their vehicle is gone and alert the police.
Sometimes members of New Jersey-based car theft rings will take a car, then leave it parked in a lot out of state to see if somebody comes for it. With GPS tracking a standard amenity in high end cars, the vehicles can often be located and retrieved.
On the logs this week, a white 2018 Lexus was taken from a Knoll Road, North Sea, driveway sometime between 1 and 7:15 a.m. on September 8. Sometime between 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 9, and 7:51 a.m. on Friday, September 10, a gray 2021 Audi was stolen from a driveway on Majors Path in Southampton.
In both cases, the cars were left unlocked, with the keys inside.
