Bridget Fleming, Southampton Town’s newest councilwoman, took the oath of office on Tuesday in the town clerk’s office.
Ms. Fleming, who said Monday that her swearing-in was scheduled to take place at the Town Board’s meeting on March 23, said Thursday she took the oath early because there were some proclamations she wanted to sign and because she wanted to get to work immediately.
The Suffolk County Board of Elections certified the results of the March 9 special election on Tuesday. Ms. Fleming, a Democrat, won the race for the Town Board seat with 3,533 votes to Republican opponent William Hughes’s 2,919.
Town officials are still planning a ceremonial swearing-in before next Tuesday’s Town Board meeting, which will start at 6 p.m.
