Another luxury car was stolen in the Southampton Town Police jurisdiction. A 2021 Land Rover Range Rover was taken from outside a Swans Neck Lane residence in Water Mill on October 1.

Town Police joined with Suffolk County Crime Stoppers to ask for the public’s help in locating the vehicle and the person or persons who stole it. The vehicle was last seen at 8:30 p.m. and has New York license plate HXZ 1571.

Car thefts have persisted as motorists continue to leave key fobs in unlocked vehicles. Last week, police in Quogue Village reported the thefts of two pricey rides, both stolen from Dune Road driveways, taken around the same time and left accessible with the keys inside them.

On September 29, the first victim reported that a 2021 BMW X7, valued at $90,000, was taken during the overnight hours between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. It was recovered the next day in Fairfax, Virginia. The second victim reported a 2021 Cadillac Escalade, worth $110,000, stolen between 12:25 and 12:35 a.m.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest. Submit an anonymous tip to the agency by calling 1-800-220-TIPS, texting SCPD and a message to CRIMES or visiting p3tips.com. All calls and texts are kept confidential, police said.

The Hamptons International Film Festival typically takes up a lot of oxygen in the fall on the South Fork, but it’s worth celebrating a slightly smaller but just as vital event in late autumn: the Hamptons Doc Fest. Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. It’s a 12-month undertaking for Lofaro and her staff, and the result is always a tantalizing buffet of outstanding filmmaking, not to mention unforgettable stories. Overlay districts are a common zoning tool used by many municipalities. Southampton Town has used them to varying degrees of success — the aquifer protection overlay district has been a winner; a downtown overlay district in Hampton Bays less so — in various parts of the town. They essentially look at the existing zoning, then allow those rules governing what can be done on properties to be reconsidered if there’s a newer concern to be addressed. In a bid to clean up the process for creating more affordable housing, the Town Board is looking at a new overlay district that ... by Editorial Board

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now.
