Jesse Warren, in last week’s Southampton Press, urged Southampton Village to “keep Southampton running” by ensuring that affordable housing be reserved “for our teaches, nurses, first responders and retail workers” [“Rethink the Proposal,” Letters, September 18].
Indeed, the Community Housing Fund referendum was convincingly presented with that dedicated purpose and passed with 53.4 percent of votes in favor and 46.6 percent opposed. Does anyone truly believe the CHF referendum would have passed if residents had been informed that affordable housing would be open to anyone, including retired persons and nonresidents?
Town officials owe it to the community to restrict affordable housing units (subsidized with our tax dollars) to our critical workforce.
