Curtis James Gill
Curtis James Gill of Shinnecock died Saturday, January 29, at Jacobi Medical Center in Manhattan. He was 56.
Mr. Gill attended Ardina High School in Farmingdale, New Jersey, graduating at age 17. In 1971, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained at Fort Dix in New Jersey. He served with the Infantry 1st Platoon and three years later, in 1974, received an honorable discharge4. He worked for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority for six years following his time in the service.
According to survivors, Mr. Gill had a good and loving heart, and was known for his loyalty. He readily helped family and friends during times of illness and helped care for them until they returned to good health. He not only cared for his fellow man, but was a friend to animals. He nurtured and loved “Pinky,” a puppy he found and took into his home, which became his beloved pet for many years, they said.
He was predeceased by his mother, Betty Gill; father, James Gill; and a brother, Stephen Gill. He is survived by his wife, Deena Gill; son, Eric Curtis Gill; a brother, Leonard Gill of Sharon County, New York; sisters, Velma Redfield of Shinnecock, Patricia Gill and Thomasa Gill of the Bronx, Delesha Gill-Tutt and her husband Terrence Tutt of Brooklyn; great-aunts, Katharine Bosley, Bessie Marshall and Frances Coard of Shinnecock; nephews, Arnand Redfield of California, Charles Gill of Sharon County; nieces, Keri Hicks-Perez of Brooklyn, Micah Redfield-Abercrombie of Hampton Bays, Taznay Tutt of Brooklyn; one great-niece Ashli Hicks of Shinnecock; two great-nephews, Trillion Perez of Brooklyn and Nigel Abercrombie of Hampton Bays; and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church on Friday, February 4; burial followed at the Shinnecock Indian Nation Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton.
